Pole position number 101 for Lewis Hamilton, who will start in front of everyone after six Grands Prix. The reigning world champion preceded his teammate Valtteri Bottas for an all-Mercedes front row ahead of Max Verstappen. Attention, however, to the early stages of the race, with the Dutchman who decided against all odds to qualify with the Soft tire as opposed to the Medium of the two Black Arrows.
Second row for Sergio Perez, who failed to complete his last lap in Q3 due to Hamilton’s trick in an attempt to make Verstappen nervous behind him. The Mexican, however, still managed to score the minimum goal of being behind his teammate, beating Pierre Gasly and a revived Lando Norris, capable of harpooning the third row after suffering a lot on the flying lap. Seventh time for Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, while Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso’s Alpines and Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin completed the Top-10.
Carlos Sainz was surprisingly eliminated in Q2, as the Spanish driver lost control of his Ferrari in the last corner during his first attempt, crashing into the protective barriers. The race is now an uphill battle for the Spaniard, on a track where overtaking is almost a dream: Daniel Ricciardo, Lance Stroll and the two Alfa Romeos of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi were out in Q2.
Eliminated for the first time in Q1 this year was George Russell, only 17th behind Yuki Tsunoda and ahead of Nicholas Latifi’s other Williams. the Haas of Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher will close the group, with the latter not able to take part in qualifying after his crash in FP3.
