One of the most talked-about topics in Formula 1 this season, particularly in recent weeks, has been the ADUO system (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities). Introduced to help maintain competitive balance among power unit manufacturers, the mechanism allows teams to make targeted improvements if the FIA’s performance analysis identifies a significant gap between engine suppliers during the season.

During the FIA press conference in Barcelona, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu shared his thoughts on the ADUO framework and discussed what the American team expects from future Ferrari power unit developments.

Komatsu appeared alongside Audi CEO Mattia Binotto and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff during Friday’s FIA media session, where discussions focused heavily on the future of Formula 1 engine development and the role ADUO could play in preventing large performance disparities between manufacturers.

Ferrari developments remain crucial for Haas

Following the conclusions reached after the Monaco Grand Prix, Red Bull is currently believed to possess the strongest internal combustion engine package on the grid, rather than Mercedes as many had initially expected. Under the ADUO framework, this assessment could potentially allow rival manufacturers, including Mercedes, to introduce performance improvements designed to reduce the gap.

Unlike factory manufacturers such as Mercedes and Audi, Haas does not produce its own power unit and instead depends entirely on Ferrari for its engine supply. As a result, any future ADUO-related developments introduced by Ferrari could have a direct impact on Haas’ competitiveness.

Addressing the subject, Ayao Komatsu made it clear that the team has confidence in Ferrari’s ability to deliver meaningful improvements.

“Naturally, we trust Ferrari to produce a good upgrade on the ICE side,” he said.

The reference was specifically to the internal combustion engine component of the power unit, which remains a critical area of performance despite the increasingly important role played by the hybrid systems.

Engine upgrades could influence overall performance deployment

Komatsu also pointed out that any improvements made to the internal combustion engine can generate secondary benefits across other performance areas, even if those aspects are not the direct target of the upgrade programme.

“But obviously this will also have an impact on our deployment, even though that is not the area being modified as a direct consequence of an ICE improvement,” Komatsu explained.

In modern Formula 1, power unit performance is closely linked to how energy is deployed throughout a lap. Improvements to one component can therefore influence the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall package, helping teams optimize performance in race and qualifying conditions.

Haas focused on maximizing every advantage

As a customer team, Haas has limited influence over the development direction of the Ferrari power unit. However, Komatsu emphasized that the team’s responsibility is to ensure it can immediately capitalize on any performance gains delivered by its Maranello partner.

“So once again, as a customer team, we simply need to be able to make the most of it straight away,” Komatsu said. “We’re looking forward to it.”

With the ADUO system now becoming an increasingly important factor in the development race among Formula 1 manufacturers, Haas will be watching Ferrari’s next moves closely. Any gains achieved by the Scuderia could provide a valuable boost not only for the factory team but also for its customer operation, as the fight for points in the midfield continues to intensify throughout the season.
