Ferrari Mexico GP strategy: Fred Vasseur explains Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc’s key challenge

Ferrari has a golden opportunity to fight for victory at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, but team principal Fred Vasseur has warned that perfect strategy and race execution will be essential to capitalise on Lewis Hamilton’s pole position and Charles Leclerc’s third place. With both drivers starting on the clean side of the grid, the Scuderia could use its two-car advantage to attack the long run towards Turn 1, where slipstreaming and track position may prove decisive.

The Maranello team dominated the headlines during qualifying at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, securing its first pole position of the season with Lewis Hamilton while Charles Leclerc completed the top three. The result underlines the competitiveness of the SF-26 and confirms the encouraging progress that emerged following the Ferrari upgrades introduced at Austin. While the revised package had already demonstrated promising signs in Texas, the car appears to have reached an even higher level of performance in Mexico.

Fred Vasseur has every reason to be satisfied, although the French team principal is determined not to become carried away by the result. Lewis Hamilton’s first pole position for Ferrari represents an important milestone, while Charles Leclerc might have completed an all-Ferrari front row without a small mistake on his final Q3 attempt.

Nevertheless, qualifying first and third places the Scuderia in a strong position to challenge for victory. The next step is converting that potential into a significant result through faultless race management, careful strategic decisions and effective cooperation between the two drivers.

Fred Vasseur celebrates Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari pole position

Speaking to Ferrari’s official website, Fred Vasseur began by acknowledging the significance of the seven-time world champion’s achievement and the work undertaken by the entire team to reach this point.

“I’m very happy for Lewis and for the whole team. His first pole position with Ferrari is an important milestone and a result that rewards the work we’ve done to get here. This weekend, Lewis has found the right balance between pushing and managing the tyres, and that has paid off.”

The Ferrari team principal also praised Charles Leclerc, recognising that the Monegasque had been capable of challenging for pole position before an error compromised his final attempt.

“Charles had a good first attempt in Q3, then made a small mistake on his final run, but third is still a good position to start from here.”

The result gives Ferrari two cars near the front of the grid, reinforcing the impression that the SF-26 has made meaningful progress. However, the team’s challenge now shifts from extracting maximum performance over a single lap to managing the complexities of the Grand Prix itself.

Ferrari Mexico GP strategy: how Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc could work together

Fred Vasseur’s attention has already turned towards the race start, where the unusual layout of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez creates one of the most demanding opening sequences on the Formula 1 calendar.

Although pole position is valuable, it does not necessarily guarantee an advantage approaching the first corner. The extremely long straight from the starting grid provides following cars with an opportunity to benefit from the slipstream, build additional speed and challenge for position before the braking zone.

On several previous occasions, the driver starting third has managed to emerge ahead after Turn 1. This makes Ferrari’s starting configuration particularly interesting, with Lewis Hamilton on pole and Charles Leclerc immediately behind him in third.

Both drivers will line up on the clean side of the circuit, potentially providing a useful advantage in the initial acceleration phase. Their ability to work together, or at least avoid compromising one another, could become an important factor in protecting Ferrari’s position against its rivals.

Fred Vasseur acknowledged the significance of the starting positions while explaining the challenges awaiting his drivers.

“The most important part of the job, however, will be tomorrow. Both Lewis and Charles will start on the clean side of the track, and a lot will depend on the run to Turn 1, where the slipstream could play an important role.”

The French manager then highlighted another potentially decisive factor once the opening lap has been completed.

“After the first lap, the key will be trying to stay in clean air, because overheating when following another car is a problem we all have to deal with.”

Speaking separately to Sky Sport F1, Fred Vasseur expanded on the significance of the starting grid and suggested that having both Ferrari drivers on the clean side could be particularly useful.

“This will be the longest run to the first corner of the season, and the slipstream will certainly play an important role. I still prefer to start ahead of everyone, but having first and third place, with both cars on the clean side of the track… perhaps it’s better this way.”

His comments leave open the possibility of a coordinated approach between the Ferrari drivers during the opening metres of the race.

However, the team will need to evaluate every potential scenario carefully. The objective cannot simply be to defend Lewis Hamilton’s pole position or create an overtaking opportunity for Charles Leclerc. Ferrari must maximise its overall result while avoiding an internal battle that could compromise such a favourable starting situation.

The importance of the opening corners is reinforced by Charles Leclerc’s concerns about overtaking difficulties at the Mexico GP, particularly once the field has settled into the race.

Why clean air and overheating could decide Ferrari’s Mexico GP race

Another important consideration is how difficult overtaking could become after the opening corners. The circuit layout, combined with the risk of overheating when following another car, makes it challenging to remain close enough to attempt a pass.

As a result, gaining positions during the initial phase and then maintaining track position could prove decisive. A driver who secures clean air ahead may enjoy a considerable advantage over rivals forced to follow closely through the circuit’s demanding sections.

Ferrari will therefore need to develop a strategy that accounts not only for tyre degradation but also for the importance of maintaining both cars in clean air whenever possible.

That will require precise decisions from the pit wall, effective communication between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc and, above all, consistently accurate execution throughout the race.

The Scuderia has demonstrated that it possesses a highly competitive car over one lap. The next challenge is confirming that performance over a full Grand Prix distance, where tyre management, traffic and strategic timing can have an equally significant influence on the final result.

With the team approaching the race from such promising grid positions, the Ferrari pit-stop and strategy statistics offer further insight into the team’s historical pit-lane performance and race-strategy decisions.

Fred Vasseur warns Ferrari to stay calm despite Mexico GP pole

Despite the excitement surrounding Ferrari’s qualifying breakthrough, Fred Vasseur has urged the team to maintain a balanced approach. The satisfaction of securing pole position must not distract anyone from the work required to convert that achievement into victory.

The Ferrari team principal believes the same discipline is necessary during both difficult and successful periods, insisting that strong results should not fundamentally change how the team approaches a race weekend.

“We have to stay calm in every situation. When the results aren’t exceptional, we have to remain calm, but even when we’re on pole position, we have to stay calm. We need to focus on ourselves, think about our strategies for tomorrow and have a clean race.”

His comments reflect the importance of keeping the team’s attention on execution rather than allowing the qualifying result to create unnecessary pressure.

Ferrari has already experienced encouraging progress following its Austin upgrades, but Fred Vasseur knows that a strong starting position alone will not be enough to guarantee the result the team wants.

Looking beyond Mexico, the French manager also explained why a sequence of positive performances towards the end of the season would be important for Ferrari’s longer-term prospects.

“Finishing the season with good results is important, and obviously it’s also positive for the team, for the team’s spirit over the coming months and with next year in mind. But right now, let’s focus on Mexico because the important thing for us is to win the race.”

Ferrari targets Mexico GP victory after encouraging Austin upgrades

That final statement captures Ferrari’s ambition heading into the Mexican Grand Prix. The SF-26 improvements demonstrated at Austin appear to have translated into even stronger competitiveness in Mexico, where the characteristics of the circuit seem particularly well suited to the car.

The pace shown during Friday’s FP2 race simulations has strengthened the belief that victory is a realistic objective. However, the strong performance demonstrated so far will only matter if Ferrari can execute its race effectively.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have an excellent opportunity. The seven-time world champion will start from the most advantageous grid position, while his teammate may be able to exploit the slipstream to challenge immediately for the lead.

Ferrari must be precise in preparing the start, managing its race strategy and making the decisions that will determine how both drivers progress through the Grand Prix.

The Maranello team finally appears to have the tools required to fight for victory. Now it must demonstrate that it can use them effectively when the opportunity matters most.
