Carlos Sainz Sr., currently competing in the Dakar Rally, took a moment to review his son’s first season with Williams in Formula 1 and shared his expectations for Ferrari in 2026.
Carlos Sainz Jr., after a somewhat challenging start to the season, managed to bounce back strongly. Over the course of 24 races, the Spanish driver brought Williams to the podium twice. These results, combined with the consistency of both Carlos Sainz Jr. and teammate Alex Albon, helped the Grove-based team achieve one of the best seasons in its history, finishing fifth in the 2025 Constructors’ Championship. With the new year underway, it’s time to reflect, and Sainz Sr., speaking to Sky Sport, discussed his son’s F1 season, expectations for 2026, and also offered some thoughts on Ferrari.
The Ferrari of the future
Carlos Sainz Sr. admitted: “For Carlos [Sainz Jr.], it was a good end to the season. And it’s really interesting to see what happens now with the new regulations. Both the chassis and the engine will change. I think many people are eagerly waiting for the tests to see what will happen with the new rules.”
Without getting too specific, Sainz Sr. also commented on what Ferrari’s 2026 season might look like—the team his son raced for until 2024. When asked by Sandro Donato Grosso, Sky Sport correspondent at the Dakar, whether Ferrari would still struggle next year, the Spanish driver replied: “I have no idea. We’re not inside the team, and I can’t judge anything from the outside. But Ferrari always does things pretty well. I don’t think they will struggle too much.”
