Giampaolo Dallara is an 86-year-old aeronautical engineer who still continues to contribute to the successes of the Italian Motor Valley. He was recently interviewed by Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport, which reported the interview in today’s edition.
Giampaolo Dallara Dallara has worked for Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini, as well as having produced the chassis for the IndyCar Series for years, he designed in F1 with De Tomaso and Scuderia Italia and today in Varano de’ Melegari he produces the chassis of the Ferrari-powered Haas. The Italian engineer has never stopped thinking about the future of mobility, and in addition to cars, today he also designs carbon components for Elon Musk’s Space X.
These are his opinions regarding the evolution of Formula 1: “It is something in continuous evolution. We can no longer speak only of a series of projects that are valid for this or that season, but we must take into account the variations that the teams adopt in course of work. They are too many to be counted, sometimes such as to completely change the values in the field between March and December. Formula 1 is in constant evolution. Look at Mercedes who found the solution to its problems during the season. But by far the strongest and most consistent was Red Bull who deserved to win both titles, drivers and constructors”.
Speaking of the drivers, he adds: “Today Max Verstappen is very strong, he is among the three-four strongest overall, on a par with Lewis Hamilton and someone else. Like Charles Leclerc, who deserves to win a world championship. But I don’t know if he’s the strongest of all.”
Regarding the changes at the top of Ferrari’s Formula 1 Racing Division and Mattia Binotto’s departure farewell, Giampaolo Dallara said: “Mattia is an excellent engineer, a respectable person who has lived all his life in Maranello. I’m not so into Ferrari to comment on the reasons led to this decision, but Ferrari’s 2022 season was good. Not great, but good. Second place in the constructors is a success, not a disappointment.”

Asked about the new Ferrari team principal, Fred Vasseur, the Italian businessman and motorsports engineer replied: “We’ve known each other for many years and he was among the most successful people in the categories that precede Formula 1, where he has collaborated with us and has always worked very well. He is a winner, a determined person who knows the world of motor racing and Formula 1 well. The F1-75 was very competitive, Ferrari was able to fight for victories, for pole positions, after a really difficult year and a half. If the conditions exist to win, the team is already very strong and Fred Vasseur will do his part.” – the owner of Dallara Motorsports added.
The engineer concludes the interview for Corriere dello Sport by talking about the possible changes that Formula 1 could face in the future, dwelling on the aerodynamic aspect and pointing out that “regarding aerodynamics, there are still several unexplored and also very fascinating frontiers. Beyond the racing aspect, which is more limited, the winning car in the near future will be the one that are able to find the best solutions in that sector. I’m very curious to see them…” – Giampaolo Dallara concluded.
