After winning the Formula 1 drivers’ title in 2021, Red Bull was the team that best interpreted the new aerodynamic regulations, which were introduced in 2022, dominating the season that has just ended and easily winning both the Drivers and Constructors’ championship. Credit for this triumph also (and above all) goes to Adrian Newey, currently the chief technical officer of the Milton Keynes team, a true genius in terms of design and car development.
And the British engineer was interviewed by the official website of Red Bull, to look back on Max Verstappen and his team’s 2022 Formula One season, while also sharing some considerations in view of the year to come. According to Adrian Newey, 2023 will be a closely contested championship, in which Mercedes and Ferrari will solve their respective problems and return to challenging the Austrian side for the title. Below are some of his comments.
Adrian Newey first said: “Ferrari will not stop here. They have had some reliability problems and have made a couple of mistakes during the last year, but they will fix their weaknesses, they will come back much stronger. And also, obviously, Mercedes. They were quite off the pace, but yes, they have improved a lot. We know they’ll be there, so it’s definitely going to be a tough year.” – Adrian Newey added.
As for the 2022 Formula 1 campaign, the British engineer explained Red Bull’s slow start by tracing it back to the heated battle against Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes during the previous season.

“Statistically, the RB18 has been our best car. It’s a car I think we can be very proud of, as we had a close fight for the title in 2021, a fight that probably took too many resources from us. We struggled a a bit with pre-season testing, but we had done some research and knew what we had to do.”
The final comment on the team’s development capacity: “When we brought the package to Bahrain, we were definitely ‘catapulted’ behind Ferrari. After that, we started developing it and in the second half we had a very competitive package”.
