After retiring from Formula 1 last December, former Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel is reportedly ready to make a sensational move to Formula E with the ABT Cupra team next year, following Robin Frijns’ departure from the German team. The four-time world champion hung up his helmet at the end of the last Formula 1 season, concluding a remarkable career, including six years with the Maranello team, unfortunately without being able to win the title with Ferrari, with remains his only regret remains regarding his impressive Formula 1 career.
Is Sebastian Vettel returning to competitions in Formula E, replacing Frijns at the ABT Cupra team?
One of the main reasons for Seb’s farewell to Formula 1, besides his desire to spend more time with his family, is linked to the theme of environmental sustainability, which has been close to the German’s ideals, especially in his later years of his career.
One of the sustainability projects that Sebastian Vettel has been pursuing in recent months is to demonstrate that he can compete with vehicles powered by eco-fuels, which are significantly less polluting than current Formula 1 cars.
Moreover, last July, the German took part in the Goodwood Festival, driving two historical cars from the past, the Williams FW14B and the McLaren MP4/8. These cars were specially modified for the event, using exclusively synthetic fuels.
In this sense, Formula E could represent an excellent compromise for him. Even the possible new teammate, Nico Muller, provided important hints about his team’s interest in the German driver.
“I don’t know if he’s already bored with retirement, but I know a former German Formula 1 champion who has been living in Switzerland for a while. I would advise him to give it a try, it’s fun! It would be great not only for me but for the entire movement.” – he explained

Even ABT CEO Thomas Biermaier, after bidding farewell to Frijns, hinted at the number one candidate to replace the Dutch driver: “His plans don’t align with ours. Robin is a friend and will remain one. Maybe we’ll visit him in Switzerland. There are drivers very committed to the environment and sustainability.”
These words leave little room for interpretation. The former Ferrari and Aston Martin driver indeed resides in Canton of Thurgau, in the northeast of Switzerland. Moreover, he is, of course, one of the leading drivers dedicated to the fight for environmental sustainability.
