George Russell: Ferrari could have easily finished 1-2 in F1 Baku GP. George Russell reflects on the 2025 Baku GP.

George Russell (Mercedes W16), race start 2025 F1
George Russell was at the center of a lighthearted exchange with Max Verstappen at the conclusion of the Baku Grand Prix. Here’s what happened.Despite feeling unwell and starting the weekend on the back foot, a feverish George Russell managed to secure second place in Baku, finishing just behind Max Verstappen. Combined with the fourth-place finish of rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, George Russell’s result helped Mercedes surpass Ferrari in the constructors’ championship, although the gap between the two teams remains minimal. The points difference between Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull is very tight, especially with seven races still to go in the 2025 F1 season. Brackley’s team holds a slim four-point lead over Ferrari and an 18-point advantage over Red Bull. With so many points still up for grabs, no team can afford to relax.

Who is the favorite for second place?

While McLaren holds a strong grip on first place and merely delayed celebrations in Baku, the fight for second in the constructors’ championship remains wide open. At the FIA press conference following the race, there was a playful exchange between George Russell and Max Verstappen on this very topic.

When asked to reflect on the battle for second place, George Russell told the media: “Well, I think at the moment, with our current form, there’s about as much chance that Max finishes ahead of us as there is that Ferrari does, to be honest.” Ironically, Max Verstappen immediately corrected the British driver: “Red Bull, no?” The four-time world champion had collected most of the points for Red Bull, prompting Russell to joke: “Yes, Team Verstappen!”

George Russell continued: “Anyway, sorry, I lost my train of thought… But really, everything changes so fast. Ferrari seemed incredibly strong on Friday here, and they’ve always been very competitive at this track. Charles [Leclerc] has been on pole here four times, and they could easily have been first and second on the grid. And, given how difficult it is to overtake, they would probably have finished first and second in the race as well. But, of course, they had a poor qualifying and went home with very few points, while we took 30. So, honestly, no one can know for sure.”

I am speechless. Ferrari remains a comedy and the laughing stock on the grid. I think so many people wander why they still carry on in F1 but for whatever reason there excuses year in and year out seems to be accepted. I would love to be employed by them. Great salary for years without having to worry no matter how terrible the inconvenience is.

Ferrari is the only team to compete in F1 since its inception also more importantly, its the only team who’s first priority is to go racing. Selling cars on the back of that is entirely secondary in the manufacturer’s existence. So, no Ferrari, no Formula One regardless of points scored.

Ferarri’s worst enemy, is Ferarri. They always seem to fumble strategy and waste opportunities. “The Ferrari way” of doing things, does not work anymore in the modern age. Iirc:
    1975.1976.1977. 1979. 1982.1983. 1999.2000
    2001.2002.2003. 2007.2008. Then the drought….
My Couch Coach opinion: If I was Ferrari board and was Serious about winning again: I’d get a certain Mr C H on the line, and confirm when his gardening leave is over, mid 2026. Mr 44 is not going to bring the results. $200mil + wasted..
