George Russell finished the Spanish Grand Prix in second place, narrowly missing out on victory as Lewis Hamilton’s strategy and Ferrari’s impressive race pace proved decisive. Despite falling short of the top step of the podium, the result represents a welcome boost for the Mercedes driver after two particularly difficult race weekends.
The British driver was encouraged by his return to the podium, although Ferrari’s dominance throughout the Barcelona weekend left a strong impression. At the same time, Mercedes also had to deal with the disappointment of losing Andrea Kimi Antonelli late in the race. For now, however, George Russell can take satisfaction from a strong result and from sharing the podium with fellow Britons Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris.
George Russell’s reaction after the Spanish Grand Prix
“First of all, huge congratulations to Lewis. He will always be a friend of Mercedes, and I’m very happy to see him win because he deserves it. I’m really pleased to be back on the podium and to have had a clean race, but our pace was not at Ferrari’s level. The second stint was very complicated,” said George Russell after the race.
Russell warns Mercedes about Ferrari’s progress
The Mercedes driver also acknowledged the significant step forward made by Ferrari over the course of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.
“Yesterday it was a surprise to see them so close, and today that pace was confirmed in the race. We definitely have to consider them a threat because they have closed the gap,” he added.
Ferrari’s strong performance in Barcelona appears to have changed the competitive picture at the front of the Formula 1 field. While Mercedes remains firmly in the fight, George Russell’s comments underline the growing respect within the paddock for the progress made by the Maranello team, particularly after introducing its latest upgrades.
