General Motors postpones F1 entry
One year later than initially planned, General Motors will enter Formula 1. The Americans will debut their power unit starting from the 2029 season (they were originally supposed to do so in 2028), and the FIA has officially registered them as a power unit manufacturer. As is well known, they will support the Cadillac team.
This delay will allow Cadillac to use Ferrari power units for three years (2026, 2027, and 2028), something that the December agreements had not excluded as they were “multi-year in nature” and which, moreover, was reasonable to expect given the difficulty of starting a Formula 1 engine project from scratch, especially during a period of rethinking about the future of the sport in this area.
The statement
This is the FIA’s statement:
“The FIA has officially approved GM Performance Power Units LLC, a company formed by TWG Motorsports and General Motors to construct power units for the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, as a power unit supplier for the F1 World Championship starting in 2029,” it reads. “The Cadillac Formula 1 Team will join the grid in 2026 and will use Ferrari power units until the GM engines are homologated for race use.”
“More than two years ago, the FIA approved the entry of an 11th team into the F1 World Championship, driven by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunities to our sport,” added President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. “Although the process has sometimes been challenging, the progress we are seeing today confirms that it was worth it. The entry of General Motors as an authorized power unit supplier for the championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors. Their commitment to innovation, sustainability, and competition is fully aligned with the FIA’s vision for the future of our sport. Furthermore, it reinforces our commitment to making motorsport more accessible and inclusive around the world – welcoming new manufacturers, advancing technology, and connecting with a broader and more diverse fan base.”
