From 375 F1 to SF-24: the story behind the names of Ferrari’s Formula 1 cars. A look at the story behind the name of various Ferrari F1 cars.

Just over two weeks before the official unveiling of the new single-seater, Ferrari has finally revealed the name for the 2024 car, adding another piece to the long list of Formula 1 car names.

The latest creation that will emerge from Maranello will be called SF-24, and with it, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc will seek championship glory. Recovering against the seemingly unbeatable Red Bull from the last Formula 1 season will be challenging, despite positive rumors about the new Ferrari.

Returning to the name of the new car, the series linked to the ‘SF’ designation, which began in 2015 with the SF15T, continues. Before that, starting in 1992, the Ferrari cars were characterized by the letter ‘F’ followed by a series of numbers often related to the reference season. In the nineteen years of the F series, exceptions were the F1-2000, the car with which Michael Schumacher brought the driver’s title back to Maranello, the 412 T1, and 412 T2.

In the early years of the long history between Scuderia Ferrari and Formula 1, various names were used for the Maranello’s different cars, from the 375 F1, the first car in 1950, to the various 312s and 156s.

Over the more than seventy years from the 375 F1 to the SF-24, Ferrari has occasionally decided to use special names linked to particular events. These include the recent SF1000 (on the occasion of the Prancing Horse’s thousandth race) and the F1-75 (to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Scuderia’s foundation). Adding to these is the Ferrari 150° Italia from 2011, born in the year of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.
