Frederic Vasseur played a pivotal role in persuading Lewis Hamilton to leave Mercedes and commit to Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 campaign. But the Briton’s early struggles in red have intensified scrutiny on Vasseur’s leadership, raising new questions about his long-term future with the team.
The Frenchman stepped into his role as Ferrari team principal in December 2022 with the mandate of restoring the team to title contention. However, the 2025 campaign has so far failed to live up to expectations. Ferrari, once trailing McLaren by just 14 points in the 2024 constructors’ standings, now find themselves a staggering 191 points behind the Woking-based team after just 10 of the season’s 24 rounds. The situation has only been made worse by Hamilton’s underwhelming start with the team, further increasing the pressure on Fred Vasseur.
Between them, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have collected just 104 and 79 points respectively, placing them fifth and sixth in the drivers’ championship. With Ferrari falling short of performance targets, senior management at Maranello are reportedly viewing the Canadian, Austrian, and British Grands Prix as a defining stretch for Fred Vasseur’s tenure at the helm.
Vasseur Has Reportedly Prevented Hamilton from Giving Up on 2025
Despite the mounting pressure, Frederic Vasseur has managed to stabilize what could have turned into a major internal crisis. According to the Italian website AutoRacer, Lewis Hamilton seriously considered abandoning his 2025 campaign due to growing frustrations with the SF-25’s performance and limitations. The seven-time world champion, who arrived at Ferrari with high expectations, has already encouraged the team to shift focus toward developing the 2026 car built under the next generation of Formula 1 regulations.
The Briton reportedly felt disillusioned by Ferrari’s technical shortcomings, particularly as he struggled to adapt to the SF-25’s characteristics. However, Frederic Vasseur has consistently reaffirmed his belief in the car’s underlying potential—despite the lack of results so far on track. This unwavering stance is said to have convinced Hamilton to remain engaged with the 2025 effort, at least for the time being.
While the Briton continues to back the former Alfa Romeo team boss publicly, it’s also clear that Lewis Hamilton’s attention is increasingly shifting to 2026, where he hopes a new ruleset and a more tailored development approach will offer a better shot at returning to championship-winning form.
Lewis Hamilton’s Loyalty Could Influence Ferrari’s Leadership Shake-Up
Lewis Hamilton’s continued support may prove crucial for Frederic Vasseur as Ferrari’s top brass evaluate his future. There are reports that chairman John Elkann remains interested in luring Red Bull team boss Christian Horner to Maranello, though an internal candidate to replace the Frenchman has not been ruled out either.
Yet Ferrari’s leadership will be keenly aware that Lewis Hamilton nearly walked away from the current season after just 10 races. His issues adapting to Ferrari’s car philosophy have already led to suggestions that the team may need to overhaul certain operational and technical processes. Lewis Hamilton’s frustration has reportedly reached a point where he is pressing Ferrari to change its internal methods to better align with his driving style.
If the team fails to accommodate Hamilton’s demands, Frederic Vasseur could find himself caught in a storm. This risk is amplified by growing concerns that Ferrari’s 2026 power unit may lag behind what Mercedes and new entrant Audi are expected to deliver. With Audi poised to make its F1 debut in 2026 through the Sauber takeover, Ferrari’s margin for error is shrinking.
Fred Vasseur’s ability to balance short-term crisis management with long-term strategy will be critical—not only for Ferrari’s future, but for Hamilton’s as well.
