Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has confirmed that the Scuderia will head to the 2026 Formula 1 season opener in Melbourne with their sights firmly set on a race victory, following an impressive performance during pre-season testing in Bahrain.
Charles Leclerc set the benchmark on the final day of the Bahrain test, posting a 1:31.992 lap that left his nearest competitor, Lando Norris, more than eight tenths behind at 1:32.871. While this gap does not necessarily indicate that Ferrari holds a nine-tenth advantage over the field in race conditions, it highlighted the exceptional single-lap pace of the new SF-26 and showcased the potential of Ferrari’s updated aerodynamics and power unit.
Lewis Hamilton faced interruptions during his Thursday running, but the Scuderia bounced back on the final day by completing over 130 laps in total. The durability of both the new chassis and the Red Bull-derived Ferrari power unit proved robust throughout the testing sessions, suggesting strong reliability heading into the season.
Ferrari now aiming for victory in Melbourne
Fred Vasseur, who had previously stated that it ‘didn’t matter’ if Ferrari finished outside the top ten in Australia, has now revised his expectations in light of the encouraging pace shown by both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The Scuderia believe the combination of the SF-26’s efficiency and reliability gives them a genuine chance to fight for the top step at Albert Park.
While Bahrain is generally considered a low-speed, power-dependent circuit, Albert Park offers a fast-flowing layout that will test both car balance and driver skill. The French manager has cautioned against reading too much into the Bahrain test results, emphasizing that pre-season timesheets are not always fully representative of race conditions.
Historically, Ferrari have only claimed victory in the season opener twice since 2010, with Sebastian Vettel winning in 2018 and Charles Leclerc in 2022. However, Frederic Vasseur now feels that the Scuderia have the tools to challenge for the win from the very first race of 2026.
In an interview with Canal+, Frederic Vasseur explained that Ferrari’s focus is clear: while acknowledging that Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull will also be competitive, the team are preparing to aim for victory. He emphasized that maintaining composure and managing expectations is crucial, noting the importance of completing long runs to gather data and refine their race setup ahead of the Melbourne round at the Albert Park circuit.
Ferrari’s early-race strategy could shake up the order
Before testing began, the former Alfa Romeo team boss expected the start-of-season hierarchy to be highly fluid due to the new 2026 regulations. Many now consider Ferrari to be among the front-runners, alongside Mercedes and Red Bull. One particular advantage for the Scuderia could be their so-called ‘rocket-launcher’ race starts, a technique designed to maximize initial acceleration off the line. This could allow Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to make significant gains in the opening laps, even if they qualify behind their closest rivals.
Ferrari’s smaller turbo has contributed to these rapid starts, although there is a caveat: engine performance could be slightly compromised on power-sensitive circuits where top-end speed is critical. Nevertheless, the SF-26’s aerodynamic package, including the briefly tested ‘upside-down’ rear wing, highlights Ferrari’s willingness to innovate aggressively. Maranello’s engineers have clearly prioritized bold solutions over conservative development, signaling that the team is ready to challenge for wins from the outset of the 2026 season.
While pre-season testing always requires cautious interpretation, Ferrari’s pace, reliability, and innovative aero solutions have strengthened the team’s confidence. Frederic Vasseur’s confirmation that the Scuderia are targeting victory in Melbourne demonstrates a shift from measured pre-season expectations to genuine ambition for the season opener, setting the tone for an exciting start to Formula 1’s 2026 campaign.
