The “resignation” of Mattia Binotto was communicated on November 29 last year. After just two weeks, the top management of Scuderia Ferrari officially announced the signing of Fred Vasseur.
Monday 9 January will be the first day of the new Ferrari Team Principal in Maranello. While waiting for his first statements, let’s take a look together what will be the three main priorities that the Frenchman will have to face during the first weeks in his new role.
- ORGANIZATION OF THE FERRARI TEAM
The number one priority of the new Team Principal, who will also cover the role of General Manager of Scuderia Ferrari, is to reorganize the Team. The first announcement should concern the new Technical Director to whom Enrico Cardile (Head of Chassis Area) and Enrico Gualtieri (Head of Power Unit) should directly report. The most probable name is that of Simone Resta, with a past in Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and current technical director of the Haas Team. Beyond this move, other key roles of the Maranello pit wall should be reviewed by Fred Vasseur with the goal of impoving the Ferrari strategies during qualifying and races. - ENSURE CONSTANT DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT THE SEASON
A very important priority, on which the Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna has already had the opportunity to speak with Frederic Vasseur, is related to the developments on the single-seater during the Formula One season, the real weakness of the Ferrari management in the past years. The new Team Principal will need to review processes, planning and key roles to ensure developments are effective throughout the 2023 championship. - DRIVERS MANAGEMENT
Among the activities not to be underestimated, there will be the one linked to the management of the two drivers. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have raced together for the past two seasons. Their relationship is more than good but some decisions made by Mattia Binotto during the 2022 Formula 1 campaign had left a bitter taste for both of them at a certain stage of the season. Driver management will prove to be even more important if the single-seater has such a performance as to allow the Monegasque and the Spaniard to fight for victories this year.
Organisation, development and driver management are therefore the first priorities on which Fred Vasseur will have to focus in order for the Maranello team to make a further step forward. There will also be many other issues on the table of the new Team Principal and General Manager that will require quick decisions to better face the short term future but also and above all to look at and plan a winning medium and long term future for the Red Team.
