Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur has recently shared his thoughts on McLaren’s impressive ability to manage tyre temperatures—an area in which the British outfit currently excels and which has implications for the entire Formula 1 field. Vasseur addressed the broader challenges posed by this advantage and how it affects competitiveness across the grid.
Formula 1 continues to be one of the most dynamic and fast-evolving sports globally. Constant changes in technical regulations, alongside the introduction of cutting-edge technologies year after year, ensure the sport remains fresh, modern, and deeply complex. However, this rapid evolution frequently results in significant performance gaps between the teams—something clearly seen this season with McLaren’s leap forward in performance.
Frédéric Vasseur, the current Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari, has pointed out a technical problem that has persisted in Formula 1 for over two decades: the challenge of managing tyre temperatures effectively. According to the Frenchman, McLaren’s current 2025 car has an outstanding edge in this specific area, giving the team a distinct advantage in variable conditions.
Fred Vasseur’s observations on McLaren’s tyre edge
In a recent interview with RacingNews365, Frédéric Vasseur discussed how the current competitive environment is significantly influenced by tyre performance and the difficulty teams face in adapting to changing conditions.
“This is not something new or limited to this season—it has been a fundamental factor in Formula 1 for the past 25 years,” Fred Vasseur explained, referring to the importance of tyre temperature management. “This becomes even more critical when the grid is tightly packed. What we’ve seen is that McLaren, depending on the conditions and even from one session to another, can suddenly find six or seven tenths of a second. It’s all about circumstances. Every team is struggling to remain consistently competitive in every condition, and everything matters—the asphalt, the track layout, the temperature. It’s a very sensitive balance.”
Ferrari aware of the gap, but still pushing for race wins
Despite acknowledging that McLaren have a noticeable advantage under current conditions, especially in terms of tyre behaviour, the former Alfa Romeo boss stressed that Ferrari are not giving up. While overtaking McLaren in the standings might be difficult this season, the French team boss remains focused on maximising performance against other front-running teams.
“We’ve already seen that catching McLaren will be difficult because they currently have an advantage,” he admitted. “On some tracks or under certain circumstances, we can still fight with them, but overall they are in a stronger position. That said, we are still in the fight with Mercedes and Red Bull Racing. The championship battle isn’t over—we are still in contention, and we believe we can still win some races. It’s crucial for the morale and motivation of the team to do that now, especially as we build momentum heading into 2026.” – the French manager concluded ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, which takes place at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot.
With new regulations expected for 2026 and major development already underway for next-generation power units and aerodynamic concepts, Ferrari sees the remainder of the 2025 season as a vital period to build confidence and push for results wherever possible.
