Fred Vasseur explains how Lewis Hamilton’s darkest Ferrari moment paved the way for his comeback
Lewis Hamilton’s first victory as a Ferrari driver at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya marked one of the most significant moments of the 2026 Formula 1 season. After a difficult debut campaign with the Scuderia, the seven-time world champion finally reached the top step of the podium in red, completing a remarkable turnaround that few could have predicted just months earlier.
The triumph in Spain represented the culmination of a long and often frustrating journey. Lewis Hamilton’s first season in Maranello fell far below expectations, with the British driver enduring one of the most challenging periods of his Formula 1 career. His struggles were so evident that some observers questioned whether he would even remain on the grid for 2026, let alone return to winning ways.
Perhaps the most telling statistic from that difficult campaign was the complete absence of podium finishes. For the first time in his Formula 1 career, Lewis Hamilton failed to secure a single top-three result across an entire season, a remarkable situation for one of the sport’s most successful drivers.
Hungary marked the lowest point
Many within the paddock viewed the Hungarian Grand Prix as the lowest moment of the Briton’s Ferrari journey. While teammate Charles Leclerc secured pole position, Lewis Hamilton could only manage 12th place in qualifying, highlighting the gap that existed between the two sides of the Ferrari garage at the time.
Following that disappointing session, Lewis Hamilton did not hide his frustration. Speaking openly about his performance, he described himself as “useless” and even suggested that Ferrari should “probably” consider finding another driver. The race itself offered little consolation. The seven-time world champion failed to recover ground and crossed the finish line outside the points, one of the rare occasions in recent years where he was unable to score.
Yet according to Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, what happened after that difficult weekend proved far more important than the result itself.
Fred Vasseur highlights Lewis Hamilton’s determination
Rather than taking time away from Formula 1 following one of the most disappointing weekends of his career, Lewis Hamilton immediately returned to work. Fred Vasseur revealed that the Ferrari driver reported back to Maranello the very next morning, determined to understand the problems and help accelerate the team’s progress.
The Frenchman believes that decision perfectly illustrated the mentality that has allowed Lewis Hamilton to rebuild his confidence and competitiveness over the past year.
Speaking to Channel 4, Fred Vasseur said:
“He’s mega emotional, Lewis, in the positive and difficult moments, in both directions. The team is also a bit emotional.
“The collaboration between the two is sometimes difficult! But overall, he was able to come back after each difficult race.
“We had a tough event last year in Budapest. In Spa, he was able to come back, to be performant, to come back on the Monday morning at the factory.
“This is paying off today. I’m more than pleased for us, but more than pleased for him too.”
A stronger Ferrari-Hamilton partnership
Fred Vasseur acknowledged that both Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton are naturally emotional environments, which occasionally made the relationship challenging during the early stages of their partnership. However, he also emphasized that the British driver consistently demonstrated an ability to respond positively after setbacks rather than allowing difficult weekends to define him.
That resilience has become one of the defining themes of Ferrari’s 2026 campaign. The team’s improved competitiveness, combined with Lewis Hamilton’s renewed confidence behind the wheel of the SF-26, has transformed the narrative surrounding the project.
The turnaround has not happened by chance. Throughout the season, Lewis Hamilton has repeatedly praised Fred Vasseur for listening to his feedback and implementing changes both on the technical side of the car and within the wider team structure. The collaboration between driver and team principal appears stronger than ever, with both men playing key roles in Ferrari’s resurgence.
Barcelona offered the clearest evidence yet that the hard work carried out behind the scenes is beginning to bear fruit. What once looked like a partnership struggling to meet expectations has evolved into one capable of challenging at the front of the grid.
For Fred Vasseur, Lewis Hamilton’s victory was not simply another race win. It was confirmation that the determination shown during the most difficult moments of his Ferrari career has finally been rewarded, proving that persistence and commitment can still make the difference at the highest level of Formula 1.
