A weekend to forget for Scuderia Ferrari in the Netherlands, as Team Principal Fred Vasseur raised concerns for the upcoming Italian Grand Prix. Both Ferrari cars retired from the race at Zandvoort due to accidents. Lewis Hamilton made a mistake in slightly wet conditions, ending up in the wall at Turn 3, while Charles Leclerc went off at the same spot following a collision with Kimi Antonelli. Vasseur commented on Ferrari’s disastrous weekend in the Netherlands.
Early struggles for Ferrari in Zandvoort
From Friday onwards, the Ferrari SF-25 faced challenges on a track that exposes every weakness of the car. Qualifying results were not ideal, but the team was determined to recover during the race. Unfortunately, events unfolded against the Scuderia, culminating in a double retirement.
Ferrari’s difficulties during the Dutch GP
The weekend in the Netherlands was a disappointing appointment for both Fred Vasseur and the Ferrari team. While the car struggled, there was still a realistic chance to reach the podium with strong strategic management. Sadly, everything went against the team, starting with Charles Leclerc’s first pit stop, and ultimately both drivers were forced to retire.
Fred Vasseur analyzed the weekend for Sky Sport F1, stating: “It was a difficult Sunday and a tough weekend overall. Friday was terrible, but then we had an excellent recovery in qualifying. Charles’ pace was good enough to get him on the podium. The truth is, however, that everything went wrong after that. When Lewis had his accident, it was the lap following Leclerc. The Safety Car came out, and we lost a couple of positions.”
Despite the error, Hamilton had been having a strong weekend: “Lewis was behind George from the start. Perhaps he went wide and touched the outer part of the track. He was doing a great job throughout the weekend. He played a crucial part in the team’s recovery. Beyond his mistake, his pace was solid. Of course, if you want to score points, you need to finish the race.”
Looking ahead to Monza
Fred Vasseur also commented on Leclerc’s move against his Mercedes rival: “Charles’ overtake was a bit aggressive,” stated the Ferrari Team Principal. “George expected Charles to go to the right, but he was surprised when he went to the left, and I don’t think he saw it coming. At Zandvoort, if you want to overtake, you have to be aggressive. It was a beautiful move, a shame it didn’t work out in the end. He had a strong first part of the race, and finishing with a retirement is heavy.”
Next week, the Formula 1 circus moves to the Italian Grand Prix, and concerns remain about potential penalties for Ferrari: “If there is a penalty for Charles, it will probably come at Monza because we didn’t finish the race here. At Monza, we expect to be in better conditions than here. It will be important to start Friday much better. I want to thank the fans for their support.”
