Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur has spoken about the innovative rear wing introduced by the Scuderia during Formula 1 testing in Bahrain, while also tempering expectations surrounding the latest SF-26 upgrades.
The opening sessions of the second week of F1 testing in Bahrain saw Ferrari take center stage. The Maranello-based team arrived in Sakhir with a series of updates on the SF-26 that immediately sparked discussion throughout the paddock. In particular, the Scuderia led by Fred Vasseur introduced a new aerodynamic element in the diffuser area and a rear wing that left rivals stunned.
During the morning session of Day 2, the rear flaps on Lewis Hamilton’s car opened by rotating as much as 270 degrees. It was a movement never seen before in Formula 1, prompting competitors to carefully analyze the potential advantages of such an aggressive and creative solution.
Vasseur names the wing and shares his thoughts on Ferrari’s updates
Ferrari’s upgrades were one of the main topics addressed by Fred Vasseur during his appearance at the official press conference. “Everyone always brings innovations, sometimes they are visible, sometimes they are not. I am sure that our competitors and everyone else on the grid are doing exactly the same. The last two updates we brought to the track were visible from the outside, but there is no big difference compared to the others. And I don’t know whether it will be for Melbourne or for the following race,” declared the Ferrari Team Principal.
Finally, speaking to French broadcaster Canal+, Fred Vasseur allowed himself a light-hearted moment, referring to Ferrari’s new rear wing as the ‘Macarena wing’, clearly alluding to the distinctive rotating movement of the flaps.
Frédéric Vasseur has therefore downplayed the revolutionary nature of Ferrari’s latest SF-26 updates, humorously dubbing the 270-degree rotating rear flap the “Macarena wing” while emphasizing that the team is still evaluating whether the package will be ready for the season debut in Melbourne.
