After weeks of hesitation, discussions, and questions from the media, Carlos Sainz has finally made official the team he will race with next season: Williams. The Grove-based team seemed an almost unrealistic option for the Spaniard, but James Vowles’ project, Mercedes engines, and a pretty decent salary (reportedly 10 million euros per season) convinced him to sign a contract that will last beyond 2026, although it seems he does have an exit clause in case a seat at a top team becomes available for the 2026 Formula 1 championship.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur immediately commented on the matter, wishing the Spaniard all the best, a driver with whom he has achieved two thrilling victories so far.
“I am happy to know that Carlos will go to Williams next season. It’s a team with a great history and tradition, founded by an enlightened man with an ambitious vision, so I know Carlos will feel at home there. I have a lot of respect for James [Vowles, ed.] and I’m sure Carlos will make a valuable contribution to his team. For now, he is still a Ferrari driver and we will work hard in the next ten races, focusing on his goals, fighting together for every point until the last lap of this championship,” said the team principal in press release to the media which was also posted by the Maranello team’s social media accounts.
