Carlos Sainz will race for Williams Racing in 2025. After months of uncertainty, the Spaniard now knows where he will be racing in 2025, and the team has officially announced his presence for the next two Formula One seasons.
The Spaniard will move from one historic team to another. Ferrari is the most successful team in history, but Williams is the second with the most Constructors’ titles, boasting nine.
The agreement comprises three key elements that convinced the Spanish driver to choose the Grove-based team. The first of these is flexibility. Carlos Sainz has signed for two seasons, with the possibility of extending for a third. However, after the first year, in 2025, Carlos Sainz can move to another team if he receives a better offer. This detail provides a certain freedom to secure a better seat in 2026, which is why he opted for Williams instead of Sauber-Audi. It is the team that offered him the most freedom among all those he negotiated with.
Williams is in the midst of a full reconstruction. They have been working on a future project for several years, so they already have a well-established and evidently progressing technical team, with the presence of well-known and significant names.
Matt Harman, former technical director of Alpine, will soon join Grove. His arrival follows that of four other senior engineers and Pat Fry. This reinforcement includes Fabricie Moncade from Ferrari, where he was responsible for performance analysis; Juan Molina, head of aerodynamics at Haas; Steve Winstanley, chief designer of composites and structures at Williams; and Robert Frith, performance manager at Alpine.
This stability, which can be extended financially for the coming seasons, was another point in favor of the team.
It has been a busy few months for Carlos. After Ferrari confirmed the signing of Lewis Hamilton for 2025 last February, the priority was to find a seat in a top team.

In this context, his name was heard among big teams like Red Bull or Mercedes, especially due to his spectacular start to the season and his victory in Australia. However, in the end, the doors of Red Bull and Mercedes closed. In the first case, because the energy drink brand decided to renew Sergio Pérez and maintain stability in the team. In the case of the Silver Arrows, Wolff seems intent on debuting Andrea Kimi Antonelli at just 18 years old, unless he finally manages to ‘steal’ Max Verstappen at the last moment. Neither McLaren nor Aston Martin, who had already closed their lineups earlier, were possibilities.
Soon after the official announcement of Carlos Sainz’s move to Williams, Scuderia Ferrari posted a message on social media to congratulate the Spaniard and express its gratitude for the time he spent in Maranello. Soon after, Charles Leclerc also reacted to the news with a message shared on his official social media accounts: “Wishing you the best for your new adventure next year Chili 🌶️ Still got half a season together to have some more special moments as teammates” – the Monegasque driver wrote, while also posting some images of the two Ferrari drivers.
