Ferrari heads to Sepang knowing that outright competitiveness may not be enough to secure a strong result, with Frédéric Vasseur stressing the importance of execution and taking every available opportunity during the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang. Formula 1 is returning to Malaysia nearly a decade after its last race at the circuit in 2017, when Max Verstappen claimed victory.
The Maranello team arrives in Kuala Lumpur after five consecutive races without a podium, searching for a positive result during a difficult final phase of the season in which Ferrari has dropped out of contention for both world championships. The Malaysian round is one of the key remaining events on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar as Ferrari attempts to end its recent run without a top-three finish.
Ferrari looks for a response at Sepang
Sepang represents a significantly different challenge compared with the circuits Formula 1 has visited in recent weeks. Its demanding layout places considerable physical and technical stress on both the drivers and their cars, while the competitive picture remains extremely close.
That narrow margin between the leading teams means Ferrari will need more than raw speed if it wants to maximise the weekend. The broader performance picture between the Scuderia and its main competitors can also be followed through the Ferrari vs F1 Rivals statistics.
Sepang weather could influence the entire Bahrain GP weekend
Another factor that cannot be underestimated is the weather. The risk of rain is expected to remain present from Friday through Sunday, potentially affecting practice, qualifying and the race itself and making adaptability particularly important throughout the weekend.
The combination of changing conditions and Sepang’s demanding characteristics could therefore create opportunities, but it may also punish any mistakes in preparation or execution.
Frédéric Vasseur: Ferrari must seize every opportunity
Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur highlighted both the particular demands of Sepang and the importance of delivering a complete weekend rather than relying solely on the performance of the car.
“Sepang is a circuit that represents a very different challenge compared with the tracks we have faced recently. The demands placed on the cars and drivers are very high, and the variable weather conditions can play an important role over the course of the weekend. As we have seen in the last few races, the field is very tightly packed and competitiveness alone is not enough: it is essential to put every aspect of the weekend together. We will have to remain focused and seize every opportunity to achieve the best possible result.”
