The internal rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc is beginning to play a key role in Ferrari’s progress during the 2026 Formula 1 season. According to Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, the growing competition between the two drivers is not something the team fears. On the contrary, the Frenchman believes that having two elite drivers pushing each other to the limit can accelerate development and provide valuable technical feedback that benefits the entire Scuderia.
After a frustrating 2025 Formula 1 campaign in which Ferrari failed to win a single Grand Prix—only managing a Sprint Race victory with Lewis Hamilton during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend—the Maranello squad appears to be entering the new season with renewed optimism. Despite the difficulties last year, when Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and sixth in the Drivers’ Championship respectively, early signs in 2026 suggest Ferrari could once again become a consistent contender at the front of the grid.
Stronger start to the 2026 Formula 1 season for Ferrari
The opening races of the new season have already delivered encouraging performances for the Italian team. During the Australian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc secured a podium finish after crossing the line in third place, demonstrating solid race pace and strong tyre management. The momentum continued at the Shanghai International Circuit, where both Ferrari drivers delivered competitive performances during the Sprint Race weekend.
In China, Charles Leclerc finished second in the Sprint Race while Lewis Hamilton followed closely in third position, with the pair battling intensely throughout several laps around the Shanghai circuit. The result represented a significant morale boost for Ferrari and highlighted the competitiveness of the SF-26 in race trim, particularly in high-speed corner sequences where the car has shown impressive stability and grip.
Fred Vasseur sees benefits in internal competition
Speaking after the Sprint Race weekend in China, Fred Vasseur explained that Ferrari fully embraces the competitive dynamic between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari team principal suggested that the rivalry between the two drivers creates an environment where both are constantly motivated to extract maximum performance from the car.
According to Fred Vasseur, having two top-level drivers pushing each other naturally produces useful technical feedback and new ideas that help engineers improve the car more quickly. He indicated that this type of internal competition had already begun generating valuable information for the team and had been contributing positively to Ferrari’s development work since earlier points in the season.
The Ferrari boss also emphasized that similar dynamics exist at other leading teams on the grid. He pointed to the partnerships between George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes, as well as the competitive relationship between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at McLaren, suggesting that such driver pairings can be beneficial for teams aiming to maximize performance.
In his view, internal rivalry among drivers tends to push everyone involved—drivers, engineers, and strategists—to raise their level. When both drivers constantly challenge each other, the team receives more detailed comparisons in data and driving feedback, which ultimately helps accelerate improvements on track.
Intense Ferrari duel during the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Race
The competitive relationship between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton was clearly visible during the Sprint Race in China. Although both drivers eventually finished on the podium, neither was willing to concede track position easily during their on-track duel.
Throughout several corners at the Shanghai International Circuit, the two Ferrari drivers fought closely while attempting different racing lines. At one stage, Lewis Hamilton attempted an ambitious move around the outside of Charles Leclerc, hoping to gain an advantage through the corner entry. However, Charles Leclerc managed to defend effectively and maintain control of the position.
During the broadcast, former Formula 1 driver and analyst Anthony Davidson highlighted how Charles Leclerc was able to take advantage of the situation when Lewis Hamilton attempted the outside move. The Monegasque driver maintained strong traction and positioning, preventing Lewis Hamilton from completing the maneuver.
At one point in the battle, Charles Leclerc reportedly expressed frustration over team radio after the Briton switched from the outside line to the inside while approaching Turn Two. The maneuver forced the Monegasque to react quickly in order to avoid losing ground.
However, the incident did not appear controversial from a sporting perspective. From the analysis provided during the broadcast, Anthony Davidson concluded that the duel between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc remained within the boundaries of fair racing. In his view, the two Ferrari drivers were simply pushing each other hard while maintaining respect on track.
A healthy rivalry that could strengthen Ferrari’s championship ambitions
For Ferrari, the emerging rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc may prove to be a crucial factor in the team’s effort to return to consistent victories. Both drivers possess exceptional speed and experience, and their ability to challenge each other could help unlock further performance from the SF-26 throughout the season.
If the internal competition continues in a constructive manner, Ferrari may benefit not only from stronger race performances but also from faster development throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season. With two highly motivated drivers constantly raising the bar, the Scuderia could find itself better prepared to challenge rivals such as Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull in the battles ahead.
