Charles Leclerc must “adapt” to Ferrari’s new SF-26 Formula 1 car, as team principal Frédéric Vasseur offered a clear explanation of what is currently missing for the Monegasque driver. The Ferrari SF-26 does not appear to suit Charles Leclerc’s driving style particularly well at this stage of the season. This assessment emerged following the Chinese Grand Prix, where the #16 driver had to settle for fourth place after a long and intense battle with his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
While Lewis Hamilton seems revitalized by the new generation of Formula 1 cars and has quickly found confidence behind the wheel of the Ferrari SF-26, Charles Leclerc is still experiencing some difficulties in extracting the car’s full potential. The contrast between the two Ferrari drivers has become increasingly evident, especially in race conditions where consistency and adaptability play a crucial role.
The technical revolution introduced between the 2025 and 2026 Formula 1 seasons has represented a massive challenge not only for engineers but also for drivers. The new cars, heavily redesigned both in terms of chassis and power unit, are still in what can be described as an early stage of development. Performance levels are expected to improve significantly as the season progresses, thanks to a deeper understanding of the hybrid systems and continuous aerodynamic and mechanical updates.
However, as highlighted throughout the paddock, drivers themselves have also been forced to undergo a significant adaptation process. The driving style required by these new-generation cars differs considerably from previous years, demanding adjustments in braking techniques, energy management, and cornering approach. Within Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton’s adaptation has been particularly impressive, as the British driver has quickly embraced the characteristics of the SF-26 and appears increasingly comfortable with its behavior on track.
In contrast, Charles Leclerc is still working to smooth out certain imperfections in his driving approach relative to the car’s demands. The challenge lies not only in understanding the mechanical balance of the SF-26 but also in optimizing the interaction with its complex hybrid systems and aerodynamic platform.
Frédéric Vasseur: “Leclerc is adapting, he will succeed”
Speaking after the Chinese Grand Prix, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur addressed the situation with clarity. “Yes, [Leclerc needs to adapt], but it is always like this: we have the biggest regulatory change from 2025 to 2026 compared to other years, and this probably requires more adaptation and changes; a different approach from the drivers. He is doing it,” said Fred Vasseur.
The Ferrari team boss emphasized that such transitions are part of Formula 1’s natural evolution, especially during periods of major regulatory overhaul. While Charles Leclerc may not yet feel fully aligned with the SF-26, Fred Vasseur expressed confidence in his driver’s ability to close the gap.
“I am not sure that it fits perfectly with his style, but he is working on it. He has a great ability to understand the situation with the car. He is very smart, and he will succeed,” concluded Frédéric Vasseur.
Looking ahead, Ferrari remains confident that Charles Leclerc will progressively unlock more performance from the SF-26 as both the driver and the team continue refining their understanding of the car. With ongoing development and increased familiarity, the Scuderia expects a more balanced performance between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton as the 2026 Formula 1 season unfolds.
