Vasseur: “Hamilton will stay in 2027
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton is set to remain with the Scuderia for the 2027 Formula 1 season, while also rejecting suggestions that the SF-26 was designed specifically to suit the seven-time world champion.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to remain Ferrari teammates in 2027
“Yes.”
That was the clear and straightforward response from Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur during an interview with Corriere della Sera when asked whether Lewis Hamilton would still be racing for Ferrari in 2027.
The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion joined the Maranello-based team for the 2025 season after Ferrari announced his multi-year contract in February 2024. According to reports at the time, the agreement was structured as a 2+1 deal, with the optional third year for 2027 resting entirely in Lewis Hamilton’s hands. In practice, it meant the British driver could decide whether to extend his Ferrari adventure for another season.
After enduring a difficult debut campaign in 2025, Lewis Hamilton has enjoyed a very different start to the 2026 season. Fred Vasseur explained why he believes the adaptation period took longer than many expected.
“I underestimated the transition from the Mercedes world to Ferrari,” Fred Vasseur admitted. “Everything here was new to him, and Lewis isn’t one of those drivers who changes teams every two or three years, like Carlos Sainz. Now he knows the tools, the people and our working methods. Thanks to the good results, he has entered a positive spiral.”
However, the Ferrari team principal firmly dismissed the idea that the SF-26 was developed specifically around Lewis Hamilton’s driving style.
“Not at all. We don’t build tailor-made Formula 1 cars,” Fred Vasseur said. “At most, a car can be developed by following the drivers’ feedback. Their input is important, but we’re talking about marginal differences.”
