Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has stressed that Lewis Hamilton is entering the 2026 Formula 1 season without the burden of pressure, despite a challenging 2025 campaign. The Maranello squad endured a frustrating year, failing to secure a single victory and finishing fourth in the Constructors’ Championship. For the first time in his career, Lewis Hamilton went a full season without standing on the podium, describing the year as a “nightmare.”
Speculation about the 41-year-old’s future intensified due to inconsistent results and a visibly frustrated demeanour after races. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher suggested that Lewis Hamilton might consider ending his career if he feels unable to outperform teammate Charles Leclerc. Despite these doubts, 2026 represents a fresh opportunity for both Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari, as the new technical regulations are believed to better suit the Brit’s driving style. Under the previous rules, Hamilton struggled, achieving only two wins between 2022 and 2025.
Fred Vasseur on Hamilton’s mindset ahead of 2026
Fred Vasseur emphasized that Lewis Hamilton is not entering the new season with added pressure. According to Fred Vasseur, the British driver is approaching the year as a fresh start: new regulations, a new car, and a chance to redefine his trajectory with the Maranello team. Observers from pre-season testing, including Martin Brundle, have noted that the British driver appeared more confident and comfortable in the SF-26 than he had in previous seasons. The car’s technical upgrades and innovations, combined with increased attention to Hamilton’s feedback, have contributed to this renewed sense of control.
Vasseur has also worked to eliminate the so-called “culture of fear” that plagued Ferrari in prior years of underperformance. By insulating the team from external criticism and focusing on internal cohesion, he believes that Lewis Hamilton can approach 2026 with clarity and confidence. Speaking to Motorsport Italia, Vasseur remarked that Hamilton is “starting from scratch” and is equipped with enough experience to focus on the present rather than dwelling on past struggles.
Setting expectations: Ferrari cautious ahead of the Australian Grand Prix
Despite optimism around Lewis Hamilton, the Ferrari team boss has been careful not to promise specific results. With the 2026 technical overhaul introducing numerous unknowns across the grid, the pecking order remains uncertain. Ferrari aims for victory, but the team principal acknowledges the difficulty in defining precise targets at this stage.
“At the moment, it’s impossible to predict exact outcomes,” Vasseur explained. “There are simply too many variables to quantify performance accurately. Up until the final hours of testing in Bahrain, we saw several cars very close together, but factors like fuel consumption and different power unit configurations can change lap times by half a second or more.”
Race simulations provide some insight, but the French manager stresses that these are still approximations and cannot account for every variable. The key focus remains on ensuring that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc can extract maximum performance from the SF-26 while adapting to the new generation of cars.
Looking ahead: a new chapter for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari
Fred Vasseur believes the 2026 season offers a unique opportunity for Lewis Hamilton to reset and redefine his legacy at Ferrari. With the new regulations, a car tailored more closely to his driving style, and a supportive team environment, the seven-time world champion has a genuine chance to recapture the form that made him a dominant figure in F1. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc continues to provide an intense benchmark, pushing the Briton to deliver his best in what promises to be a pivotal season for both drivers and the Scuderia.
