After a season like 2021, which was thrilling and exciting until the checkered flag of the the final round of the championship, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina circuit, expectations in terms of competitiveness for the future had risen a lot. The desire was for fans to be able to see such a level of competition more often. And even if this year the situation was far different from what we witness in the 2021 F1 campaign, the hope for the 2023 Formula 1 championship is the same.
Indeed, given how the 2022 season ended, the fact that the fight can be extended to more than two contenders can become a clear possibility next year. This is also the view of Austrian former racing driver and current team principal of the Scuderia AlphaTauri Formula One team, Franz Tost.
At this early stage, without yet having the slightest clue as to what the cars’ performance will be in 2023, one can reason by looking at the drivers: “The superiority seen on the track by Max Verstappen and Red Bull is something that rarely happens. [For next season] I expect a three-way battle between Max, Charles Leclerc and George Russell; in fact, the latter is already stronger than Lewis Hamilton”, stated the AlphaTauri Team Principal in an interview for the Austrian Speedweek.
In addition to the Milton Keynes team and Scuderia Ferrari, Mercedes will regularly return to fight for race wins in the next Formula One season, according to the 66-year-old Austrian manager. The significant improvement of Toto Wolff & Co. over the months does not leave too many doubts about it.

However, according to Franz Tost, it won’t be the seven-time world champion who will have a better chance of fighting for the title, but rather his younger Mercedes teammate. For a mere question of age? Why is George Russell actually better performing than his compatriot? It remains to be seen if this situation will repeat itself next year.
Then there is the question of how much the penalty imposed by the Federation will affect future dynamics: “The penalty from the FIA will have a negative effect [on Christian Horner’s team], without a doubt; even if some of the best engineers work there. But I am confident that Red Bull will be able to challenge for the title again.”
In the end, the Scuderia AlphaTauri team principal confirmed that compliance with the budget cap limit should no longer be a problem in 2023: “I don’t expect any surprises.” – Franz Tost pointed out.
