In the run-up to the 2023 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, the FIA confirmed that the Albert Park circuit will have four DRS zones.
A configuration already foreseen in 2022, but which, given the layout of the track, was not confirmed at that moment. This year, however, some work has been done and, for example, the chicane at turn 9/10 has been removed, allowing the project to be completed.
“It will be the fastest ever Australian Grand Prix, with the evolution of the car from last year and changes to the track,” said Albert Park managing director Andrew Westacott.
The aftermath of Albert Park layout changes
Considering this new development, we expect the Grand Prix to see impressive top speeds, with average speed 15km/h higher, and lap times cut by around 5 seconds.
It is also interesting to see the effects on the cars. Since the DRS will remain open for a long time (it is estimated that it will only be closed for 15/20 seconds), the more loaded set ups will be less penalised. But this will only make the effect of DRS more intense. We know that one of Red Bull’s strengths is precisely the perfect balance of the car with DRS open and closed, we’ll see if this novelty will benefit the other teams or in fact it will prove to be a further boost for Adrian Newey’s RB19 car in Australia.
