Eleven-time Formula 1 race winner Felipe Massa joined Ferrari in 2006, paired with Michael Schumacher. Felipe came within one point of the 2008 world championship, only being denied by McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the last race at Interlagos.
A look back at four of his most memorable races with Scuderia Ferrari:
Turkey 2006
Felipe Massa had turned around his 2006 season from a disappointing start and he had picked up four podiums in his first year with Ferrari by the time F1 reached Istanbul in late August. He scored his first career pole position in qualifying at the 3.32-mile track and held the lead off the line ahead of title protagonists Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. A mid-race safety car meant Massa maintained his advantage and he went on take his first ever F1 win by 5.5s, as the championship rivals duelled in his wake.
Brazil 2006
The first of many emotional moments for Massa at Interlagos. While Schumacher drew much attention on his last race for Ferrari and the various problems he suffered over the weekend, Massa took pole and won the race in dominant fashion. In the process, he became the first Brazil driver to win their home Grand Prix since Ayrton Senna did so in 1993.
Brazil 2007
Felipe Massa took pole for the F1 season finale for the second year in a row at his home race and led during the early stages. But Ferrari shuffled its drivers around during the pitstops to give Raikkonen the best shot at winning the title, which he went on to do, with Massa following him home in second place.
Hungary 2008
Arguably the best race of Massa’s F1 career, and yet one that ended in heartbreak for the Brazilian. He seized first place at the first corner from third on the grid, out braking title rival Lewis Hamilton around the outside of Turn 1 and building a comfortable lead. But, with just two laps remaining, his Ferrari engine let go on the start-finish straight and the win went to Heikki Kovalainen instead.
