This year’s Drivers’ Championship could be set to be one of the best in recent history, as there are three or four contenders for the title at the end of the year.
Here is a look at four men who, if they don’t get their hands on the trophy in 2022, have a great chance of becoming a maiden F1 world champion in the near future.
Sergio Perez
Mexican driver Sergio Perez is already one of the most successful F1 drivers in history from his country. The 32-year-old finished fourth in 2021 and he looks set to better that position this season. As of the 29th of June, he is +2800 with Betway to prevail in the 2022 Drivers’ Championship.

The former Sauber driver showed his class in the iconic Monaco Grand Prix back in May. It was the first time he had prevailed on the streets of Monaco and he was able to add his name alongside some of the great Ferrari drivers such as Michael Schumacher and Alain Frost on the roll of honor at the race.
Perez has a lot of experience in the sport. He has started in over 200 races and has proved to be very consistent, not just in qualifying on the front end of the grid but also in finishing on the podium.
If Perez can start turning some of his second and third place finishes into more wins, he is going to be a big match for every driver on the circuit in the next few years.
Carlos Sainz Jr
Ferrari will be hoping Carlos Sainz Jr can be the next driver who wins a Drivers’ Championship and Constructors’ Championship for them, and they have every reason to be optimistic about that.

Sainz Jr has been with Ferrari since the end of 2020. He has settled in well and he has shown strong progress over the last two years. In his opening season for the constructor, he had his best finish, as he ended the campaign in fifth place. The Spaniard will be hoping to take another step forward in 2022, and the early signs suggest he will do that.
In the opening nine F1 races of this season, he finished on the podium on five occasions. Sainz Jr has already been a champion in Formula Renault 3.5 Series and Formula Renault 2.0 NEC, so he knows what it takes to go all the way to a title.
Valtteri Bottas
Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas is one of the most experienced drivers in F1 today. He has 10 wins to his name, 67 podium finishes and he has accumulated over 1,700 career points since 2013.
Bottas’ last title in motor racing came in the 2011 GP3 Series. He will still believe he can fulfil his dream of being a world champion in F1. As ESPN reported last season, this is his first year at Alfa Romeo, following a five-year spell with Mercedes, where he helped them win the Constructors’ Championship five times.
The Finnish driver has gone close on several occasions in the Drivers’ Championship. He finished second in 2019 and 2020 to teammate Lewis Hamilton. Bottas was also third in 2017 and 2021. As can be seen in an inews report, he finished last season with 226 points after landing 13 podium positions.
Bottas may have to remain patient for now, at least until he gets a competitive car again. When that is the case, he will be doing all he can to convert his opportunity into a championship success.
Esteban Ocon
Frenchman Esteban Ocon picked up his maiden Grand Prix victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2021, as the BBC wrote in their review of the race. That is unlikely to be the last race the 25-year-old wins in F1, as he looks to have the talent to be a big star in the sport.
When he began his career in F1 in 2016, Ocon broke the record for the most consecutive finishes in a race. He came home in 27 contests from the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix to the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix.
The Alpine driver is helping his team remain in touching distance of the big names this season. He was the European Formula 3 champion in 2014, while he was also part of the Mercedes driver development program before he joined F1. Ocon will be bidding to add to his race wins in 2022 and prove he has the skills to be a future world champion.
With so many talented drivers in F1, the future looks very bright, with is largely thanks to so many great champions in the sport pathing the way for others to follow.
