Who is covered by the settlement
The preliminary approval of the settlement was granted by the court on June 25, 2025, and it applies to all users in the United States who had a Formula One account and watched pre-recorded videos on Formula1.com, F1.TV, or through the official apps between May 1, 2022, and June 24, 2025. Those who submit a valid claim before the deadline may receive compensation of up to 17 dollars, although the exact amount could be reduced depending on the total number of claims submitted.
How to submit a claim
Eligible users can submit their claim through a dedicated portal at Formula1USVPPASettlement.com, using a unique code received via email. Alternatively, a PDF form can be downloaded, filled out, and sent by mail. The documents are also available in Spanish. All claims must be submitted online or postmarked no later than September 22, 2025.
Next steps in the legal process
The next stage will be the hearing scheduled for October 30, 2025, where the final approval of the settlement will be determined. Only after that date, and once any possible appeals are resolved, will the distribution of refunds to users begin.
The law behind the case
The lawsuit was based on an alleged violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act, a law designed to safeguard consumer privacy. According to the plaintiffs, Formula 1’s digital platforms shared not only identifying data but also users’ entire viewing history with external parties, without providing adequate disclosure or requesting explicit consent.
