Methodology: Wins, poles, podiums and lap records are calculated from the locally processed F1DB historical race and qualifying tables. Layout-specific records are used where F1DB supplies circuit-layout IDs. Fastest-lap values describe the fastest Formula 1 race/qualifying laps present in the source data and should not be confused with records from other racing categories.

Portimão F1 records and Portuguese Grand Prix statistics

Portimão entered Formula 1 World Championship history during the extraordinary 2020 season and immediately became the setting for one of the sport’s major statistical milestones. The Algarve International Circuit hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021, with Lewis Hamilton winning both races for Mercedes.

The first of those victories was especially significant because it was Hamilton’s 92nd Formula 1 win, moving him beyond Michael Schumacher’s previous record of 91. Portimão’s short Formula 1 history also includes strong Ferrari performances from Charles Leclerc, two different Mercedes pole-sitters and a track layout renowned for its dramatic elevation changes.

Formula 1 raced at Portimão in 2020 and 2021

The Algarve International Circuit hosted two Formula 1 World Championship rounds, both under the Portuguese Grand Prix title. The first took place on 25 October 2020 before Formula 1 returned on 2 May 2021.

Both Grands Prix were contested over 66 laps of the 4.653 km circuit. Lewis Hamilton won on each occasion, giving him a perfect Formula 1 victory record at Portimão and establishing Mercedes as the only constructor to win a World Championship race at the venue.

Formula 1 did not return to Portimão after 2021, leaving those two races as the complete World Championship record of the Algarve circuit.

The Portuguese Grand Prix returned after a 24-year absence

Portimão’s arrival on the Formula 1 calendar also revived the Portuguese Grand Prix after a long absence. The championship had last held the event at Estoril in 1996 before Portugal returned as part of the revised 2020 schedule.

The Algarve International Circuit therefore became the fourth Portuguese venue to host a Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix after Boavista, Monsanto and Estoril.

Unlike those earlier circuits, Portimão brought modern Formula 1 to Portugal with a contemporary permanent facility built around substantial elevation changes and a flowing sequence of medium- and high-speed corners.

Lewis Hamilton took pole for Formula 1’s first Portimão race

Lewis Hamilton established the first official Formula 1 qualifying benchmark at Portimão during the 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver secured pole position with a Q3 lap of 1:16.652.

Valtteri Bottas qualified second with a 1:16.754, only 0.102 seconds behind his teammate, while Max Verstappen placed Red Bull third with a 1:16.904.

Charles Leclerc produced an excellent qualifying performance for Ferrari and secured fourth place with a 1:17.090. Sebastian Vettel, driving the second Ferrari, qualified 15th.

Charles Leclerc qualified fourth and finished fourth in 2020

Ferrari’s strongest Portimão weekend came during Formula 1’s first visit in 2020. Charles Leclerc qualified fourth and converted that position into fourth place in the race, finishing behind Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

The result was particularly valuable during a difficult 2020 season for Ferrari. Leclerc finished the Grand Prix on the lead lap and scored 12 championship points.

Sebastian Vettel also reached the points, finishing tenth. Ferrari therefore placed both cars in the top ten during the first World Championship race held at the Algarve International Circuit.

Carlos Sainz briefly led the first Formula 1 race at Portimão

The opening laps of the 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix produced an unusual running order as light rain and cool track conditions made tyre warm-up difficult. Carlos Sainz, then driving for McLaren, made rapid progress from seventh on the grid.

Sainz moved past both Mercedes cars and briefly took the lead of the Grand Prix. As conditions stabilised and the medium tyres on the Mercedes cars reached their operating window, Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton recovered their positions at the front.

Sainz eventually finished sixth, but his early charge remains one of the distinctive moments from Formula 1’s first Portimão race.

Lewis Hamilton’s 92nd victory made Formula 1 history at Portimão

The defining statistic from Portimão’s Formula 1 history was established on 25 October 2020. Lewis Hamilton won the Portuguese Grand Prix to claim the 92nd victory of his Formula 1 career.

That result moved Hamilton beyond Michael Schumacher’s previous record of 91 Grand Prix victories and made him the outright Formula 1 record holder for race wins at that point in the championship’s history.

Hamilton had briefly fallen behind Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz during the opening stages, but recovered as his tyres reached temperature. He passed Bottas for the lead and ultimately won by 25.592 seconds.

Mercedes dominated the 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix

Mercedes converted its front-row qualifying lockout into a one-two finish at Portimão. Lewis Hamilton completed the 66 laps in first place, while Valtteri Bottas finished second.

Max Verstappen completed the podium for Red Bull, 34.508 seconds behind Hamilton. Charles Leclerc followed in fourth for Ferrari.

The result established Mercedes as the first winning constructor at Portimão and gave the team the first two podium positions in the circuit’s Formula 1 World Championship history.

Lewis Hamilton holds the Portimão Formula 1 race lap record

Hamilton added another circuit record late in the 2020 Grand Prix by setting the fastest lap of the race. His 1:18.750 was recorded on lap 63 and earned the additional championship point available for fastest lap.

Valtteri Bottas recorded a 1:19.345 on the final lap, while Lando Norris produced the third-fastest time at 1:19.360.

Hamilton’s 1:18.750 remains the official Formula 1 World Championship race-lap record at the Algarve International Circuit because the 2021 race did not produce a faster lap.

Valtteri Bottas took pole at Portimão in 2021

When Formula 1 returned to Portugal in 2021, Valtteri Bottas reversed the qualifying order at Mercedes and secured pole position.

Bottas recorded a 1:18.348, beating Lewis Hamilton’s 1:18.355 by only 0.007 seconds. Max Verstappen qualified third, with Sergio Perez fourth.

The result gave Bottas his first and only Portimão pole position and left Hamilton and Bottas level with one pole each across the circuit’s two Formula 1 Grands Prix.

Carlos Sainz was Ferrari’s leading qualifier in 2021

Ferrari arrived at the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix with Charles Leclerc joined by Carlos Sainz. This time it was Sainz who secured the stronger qualifying position.

The Spaniard qualified fifth with a 1:19.039, only 0.003 seconds ahead of Esteban Ocon. Charles Leclerc qualified eighth with a 1:19.306.

Ferrari therefore placed both cars inside the top eight for Formula 1’s second and final Portimão Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton won again at Portimão in 2021

Valtteri Bottas started the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix from pole, but Lewis Hamilton ultimately took his second consecutive victory at the circuit.

Hamilton finished 29.148 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, while Bottas completed the podium in third place. Sergio Perez finished fourth and Lando Norris fifth.

The victory gave Hamilton two wins from two Formula 1 starts at Portimão. No other driver has won a World Championship race at the Algarve International Circuit.

Charles Leclerc scored Ferrari’s best 2021 race result

Charles Leclerc finished sixth in the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix, securing eight championship points for Ferrari. He ended the race 55.781 seconds behind winner Lewis Hamilton.

Carlos Sainz had started fifth but slipped backwards during the race and eventually finished 11th, just outside the points.

Across Portimão’s two Formula 1 races, Leclerc therefore finished fourth in 2020 and sixth in 2021, making him Ferrari’s highest finisher at the circuit on both occasions.

Valtteri Bottas set the fastest lap in the final Portimão Grand Prix

Although Lewis Hamilton won the 2021 race, Valtteri Bottas recorded the fastest lap. The Finn set a 1:19.865 on lap 65 and collected the additional championship point.

Sergio Perez recorded the second-fastest lap at 1:20.643, while Max Verstappen’s best official time was 1:20.695.

Bottas’s lap remained slower than Hamilton’s 1:18.750 from 2020, so the outright Formula 1 race-lap record at Portimão continued to belong to Hamilton.

Who has the most Formula 1 wins at Portimão?

Lewis Hamilton is the outright Portimão Formula 1 wins record holder with two victories. He won both World Championship Grands Prix staged at the circuit, giving him a 100 per cent winning record at the venue.

No other driver has won at Portimão in Formula 1. At constructor level, Mercedes has the equivalent record with two victories from two races.

Hamilton is therefore responsible for every Formula 1 World Championship win recorded at the Algarve International Circuit.

Mercedes holds a perfect Portimão Formula 1 win record

Mercedes won both Formula 1 Grands Prix staged at Portimão and placed at least two cars on the podium in each race.

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finished first and second respectively in 2020. One year later, Hamilton won again while Bottas took third behind Max Verstappen.

Mercedes consequently recorded four podium finishes from a possible six across Portimão’s complete Formula 1 World Championship history.

Portimão pole position records

Portimão’s two Formula 1 pole positions are shared between the Mercedes teammates who dominated the venue’s short World Championship history.

Lewis Hamilton took pole in 2020 with a 1:16.652, while Valtteri Bottas started first in 2021 with a 1:18.348.

The slower pole time in 2021 does not indicate a change of circuit layout. Conditions, tyre compounds and the technical regulations surrounding the two events differed, while F1DB records both Grands Prix on the same 4.653 km configuration.

Ferrari’s Formula 1 record at Portimão

Ferrari competed in both Formula 1 World Championship races held at Portimão but did not record a victory, pole position, podium or fastest race lap.

The Scuderia’s strongest result came through Charles Leclerc in 2020. He qualified fourth and finished fourth, making that position Ferrari’s best starting spot and best race finish at the circuit.

Leclerc added sixth place in 2021. Sebastian Vettel scored one point with tenth position in 2020, while Carlos Sainz finished 11th in Ferrari’s final Portimão appearance.

Those results make Leclerc the central figure in Ferrari’s Portimão statistics, with two points finishes from the circuit’s two Formula 1 races.

Portimão has a 4.653 km Formula 1 layout

F1DB records the Algarve International Circuit’s Formula 1 configuration at 4.653 km with 15 turns, running clockwise.

One of Portimão’s defining features is its elevation change. The circuit rises and falls repeatedly around the Algarve landscape, creating several blind approaches and compressions that give the lap a character quite different from many relatively flat modern permanent venues.

The final sector leads through the long right-hand Galp corner before drivers return to the main straight, while several earlier sections combine elevation changes with fast corner sequences.

One Formula 1 layout at Portimão

F1DB associates both the 2020 and 2021 Portuguese Grands Prix with the same 4.653 km Formula 1 layout.

That allows the World Championship records from both events to be compared directly without separating the statistics between different configurations, as is necessary at circuits such as Phoenix or Buenos Aires.

Hamilton’s 2020 qualifying and race-lap benchmarks therefore remain directly comparable with the times recorded when Formula 1 returned one season later.

Lewis Hamilton owns Portimão’s principal Formula 1 records

Portimão’s short World Championship history is dominated statistically by Lewis Hamilton. He holds the circuit’s race wins record with two victories and set the fastest official race lap at 1:18.750.

Hamilton also took one of the circuit’s two pole positions and stood on the top step of the podium in every Formula 1 race staged at the venue.

Valtteri Bottas owns the other pole position and recorded the fastest lap of the 2021 race, but Hamilton remains the central figure in the circuit’s overall Formula 1 record book.

The Algarve International Circuit opened in 2008

The permanent Portimão facility opened in 2008 and had already been used by Formula 1 machinery before becoming a World Championship venue.

Formula 1 testing took place at the circuit during the winter of 2008-09, meaning teams and drivers had experienced Portimão long before the Portuguese Grand Prix eventually arrived in 2020.

Its elevation changes and flowing design helped give the circuit a distinctive identity when it was added to the championship more than a decade after opening.

Why Formula 1 raced at Portimão in 2020

Portimão joined the Formula 1 calendar amid the extensive restructuring of the 2020 season. The circumstances created opportunities for venues that had not been part of the original championship schedule, including Mugello, the Nürburgring, Imola and the Algarve International Circuit.

The Portuguese Grand Prix proved successful enough to return for 2021, giving Portimão a second consecutive World Championship event.

It did not remain on the regular Formula 1 calendar after that season, leaving the Algarve circuit with two Grands Prix and a compact collection of records dominated by Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton.

Portimão records versus Portuguese Grand Prix records

Portimão statistics should not be confused with the complete history of the Portuguese Grand Prix. Formula 1 has staged World Championship races in Portugal at Boavista, Monsanto, Estoril and the Algarve International Circuit.

Each venue represents a separate circuit record. Portimão is unique among them for hosting Lewis Hamilton’s record-breaking 92nd career victory and for producing two consecutive Mercedes wins during the modern era.

You can compare the Algarve venue with our Estoril F1 Records & Statistics, Boavista F1 Records & Statistics and Monsanto F1 Records & Statistics pages.
