F1 circuit layout records
Different layouts are kept separate where F1DB provides a layout identifier. This avoids comparing lap records from materially different circuit configurations as though they were the same track.

Monsanto F1 records and Portuguese Grand Prix statistics
Circuito de Monsanto gave Lisbon its only Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix and created one of the most compact circuit records in F1 history. The Portuguese road circuit appeared on the championship calendar in 1959, when Stirling Moss produced a dominant victory and Ferrari reached the podium with Dan Gurney.
This page brings together Monsanto F1 records including the race winner, pole position, podium finishers, Ferrari results, fastest race lap and qualifying benchmark. Because Formula 1 raced at Monsanto only once, every result from the 1959 Portuguese Grand Prix forms part of the circuit’s complete World Championship record.
Formula 1 raced at Monsanto only once
The 1959 Portuguese Grand Prix was the first and only Formula 1 World Championship race held at Circuito de Monsanto. The event took place on 23 August and followed the previous year’s Portuguese Grand Prix at the Boavista street circuit in Porto.
Formula 1 therefore moved from Porto to Lisbon for its second World Championship Portuguese Grand Prix before returning to Boavista in 1960. Monsanto never appeared on the Formula 1 calendar again.
Stirling Moss dominated the 1959 Portuguese Grand Prix
Stirling Moss produced an exceptionally dominant performance in Formula 1’s only visit to Monsanto. Driving a Cooper-Climax, Moss started from pole position and completed all 62 laps in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 55.410 seconds.
Masten Gregory finished second in another Cooper-Climax but was already one lap behind the winner. Ferrari’s Dan Gurney was also one lap down in third place, meaning Moss had lapped the entire classified field during his victory.
Who has the most Formula 1 wins at Monsanto?
Stirling Moss is the only Formula 1 World Championship race winner at Monsanto. With the circuit appearing on the championship calendar only in 1959, Moss permanently leads its victory ranking with one win unless Formula 1 were ever to return to the Lisbon venue.
Cooper-Climax is consequently the only constructor to have won a Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix at Monsanto. The rankings above preserve the complete wins record from the circuit’s single championship appearance.
Stirling Moss took the only Formula 1 pole at Monsanto
Moss’s control of the weekend began in qualifying. He secured pole position with a lap of 2:02.890, placing his Cooper-Climax more than two seconds ahead of Jack Brabham.
Masten Gregory qualified third, giving Cooper-Climax the first three positions on the starting grid. Ferrari’s leading qualifier was Dan Gurney in sixth place, immediately ahead of teammate Phil Hill.
Monsanto pole position records
Because Formula 1 held only one World Championship event at Monsanto, Stirling Moss and Cooper-Climax hold the circuit’s definitive pole-position records.
The qualifying table above provides the complete starting-order history from 1959 and allows Ferrari’s performance to be compared with the dominant Cooper cars that occupied the first four positions on the grid.
Stirling Moss also set the fastest race lap
Moss completed a comprehensive statistical sweep by setting the fastest lap of the Portuguese Grand Prix as well as taking pole position and race victory.
His fastest race lap was 2:05.070, recorded on lap 28. That remains the only Formula 1 World Championship fastest-lap benchmark established at Circuito de Monsanto.
Ferrari’s Formula 1 record at Monsanto
Ferrari did not win Formula 1’s only race at Monsanto, but the Scuderia secured a podium finish through Dan Gurney. The American qualified sixth and finished third behind Stirling Moss and Masten Gregory.
Tony Brooks brought another Ferrari home in ninth place, while Phil Hill retired early in the race. The Ferrari statistics above consolidate the Scuderia’s complete Monsanto record of victories, poles and podium finishes.
Dan Gurney put Ferrari on the podium in Lisbon
Dan Gurney produced Ferrari’s strongest result at Monsanto. Starting sixth, he completed 61 laps and finished third, one lap behind Stirling Moss but in the final podium position.
That result gives Ferrari one podium from the only Formula 1 World Championship race held at the Lisbon circuit. It also adds Monsanto to the group of historic Portuguese venues at which the Scuderia achieved a top-three result.
Ferrari’s three-car presence at the 1959 Portuguese Grand Prix
Ferrari entered Dan Gurney, Phil Hill and Tony Brooks at Monsanto. Gurney and Hill qualified sixth and seventh respectively, while Brooks started tenth.
Gurney ultimately reached the podium, Brooks was classified ninth and Hill’s race ended after only five laps. The contrasting results provide the complete Ferrari picture from Formula 1’s sole Monsanto weekend.
Mário de Araújo Cabral made Portuguese F1 history at Monsanto
The 1959 Portuguese Grand Prix also represented a milestone for Portuguese motorsport. Mário de Araújo Cabral made his Formula 1 World Championship debut at his home Grand Prix, becoming the first Portuguese driver to compete in a World Championship Formula 1 race.
Driving a Cooper-Maserati, Cabral qualified 14th and reached the finish in tenth place after completing 56 laps. His debut gave Monsanto significance beyond its race winner and Ferrari results by establishing the first Portuguese driver entry in Formula 1’s championship history.
Jack Brabham’s dramatic Monsanto accident
The race also featured a major accident involving Jack Brabham. The Australian had qualified second and entered the Portuguese Grand Prix as the championship leader, but his race ended after 23 laps.
Brabham escaped the incident without serious injury, but his retirement removed one of Stirling Moss’s strongest potential rivals and became another memorable episode from Formula 1’s only visit to Monsanto.
The 5.440 km Circuito de Monsanto
F1DB records the Formula 1 configuration of Circuito de Monsanto at 5.440 km with nine turns. The clockwise road circuit was located in Lisbon and used roads through the Monsanto area.
Its relatively small number of corners compared with its lap length created a very different statistical profile from the tighter Boavista street circuit used for the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1958 and 1960.
One Formula 1 layout at Monsanto
F1DB associates Monsanto’s Formula 1 World Championship history with one recorded configuration. Unlike historic venues such as Buenos Aires, Paul Ricard or the Nürburgring, there is therefore no need to separate the circuit’s F1 statistics between several layouts.
That makes the 1959 qualifying and race benchmarks the definitive Formula 1 World Championship records for the Monsanto configuration represented in the database.
Monsanto fastest race lap and qualifying record
Although Stirling Moss holds both records, his qualifying and race benchmarks remain separate statistical categories. His pole lap of 2:02.890 represents maximum qualifying performance, while his 2:05.070 fastest race lap was achieved under Grand Prix conditions.
The statistics above retain that distinction rather than presenting one undefined time as the Monsanto Formula 1 lap record.
Most Formula 1 podium finishes at Monsanto
Stirling Moss, Masten Gregory and Dan Gurney are the only drivers to have recorded Formula 1 World Championship podium finishes at Monsanto. Each therefore has one podium in the circuit’s all-time driver standings.
At constructor level, Cooper-Climax holds two podium finishes from first and second place, while Ferrari has one through Gurney’s third-place result.
Monsanto records versus Portuguese Grand Prix records
Monsanto statistics are not identical to the complete history of the Portuguese Grand Prix. Formula 1 has also held World Championship Portuguese Grands Prix at Boavista, Estoril and Portimão, with each circuit producing its own separate record of winners, poles, podiums and fastest laps.
Monsanto and Boavista represent two different Portuguese F1 histories
The Portuguese Grand Prix moved between two street and road circuits during its first World Championship period. Boavista hosted the 1958 race in Porto, Monsanto took over for the 1959 event in Lisbon and Formula 1 returned to Boavista in 1960.
Keeping the two venues statistically separate avoids combining results achieved on completely different circuits simply because both races carried the Portuguese Grand Prix name.
