F1 circuit layout records

Different layouts are kept separate where F1DB provides a layout identifier. This avoids comparing lap records from materially different circuit configurations as though they were the same track.

Methodology: Wins, poles, podiums and lap records are calculated from the locally processed F1DB historical race and qualifying tables. Layout-specific records are used where F1DB supplies circuit-layout IDs. Fastest-lap values describe the fastest Formula 1 race/qualifying laps present in the source data and should not be confused with records from other racing categories.

Boavista F1 records and Portuguese Grand Prix statistics

Circuito da Boavista brought Formula 1 racing directly onto the streets of Porto during two very different championship seasons. The Portuguese street circuit hosted World Championship Grands Prix in 1958 and 1960, creating a short but historically important record involving Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Jack Brabham, Ferrari and several future Formula 1 champions.

This page brings together Boavista F1 records including race victories, pole positions, podium finishes, Ferrari results, fastest race laps and qualifying benchmarks. The statistics are specific to the Porto circuit rather than the complete history of the Portuguese Grand Prix, which has also been held at other venues.

Formula 1 raced at Boavista twice

Boavista hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1958 and again in 1960. Stirling Moss won the first Formula 1 World Championship race at the circuit for Vanwall, while Jack Brabham won the second for Cooper.

Those two races form the complete World Championship history of Boavista. With such a small number of events, every victory, pole position and podium represents a significant share of the circuit’s all-time Formula 1 statistics.

Stirling Moss won the first F1 race at Boavista in 1958

Stirling Moss arrived in Porto fighting Ferrari’s Mike Hawthorn for the 1958 Drivers’ World Championship. Moss qualified on pole position for Vanwall with a lap of 2:34.210, only 0.050 seconds faster than Hawthorn’s Ferrari.

Moss dominated the Grand Prix and won after 50 laps, while Hawthorn finished second for Ferrari. Stuart Lewis-Evans completed the podium in another Vanwall, with Wolfgang von Trips adding further points for Ferrari in fifth place.

The 1958 Boavista race helped decide the F1 championship

The significance of the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix extended far beyond the race result. Mike Hawthorn encountered trouble near the end of the event and initially faced disqualification over the manner in which he restarted and returned his Ferrari to the circuit.

Stirling Moss had witnessed the incident and defended his championship rival before the officials. Hawthorn’s result was ultimately retained, allowing him to keep the points from second place.

Those points became crucial at the end of the season. Mike Hawthorn eventually won the 1958 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship for Ferrari by a single point over Moss, making the Porto incident one of the most famous examples of sportsmanship affecting a title battle.

Mike Hawthorn set the fastest lap for Ferrari in 1958

Although Stirling Moss controlled the race and started from pole, Mike Hawthorn produced the fastest race lap for Ferrari. His 2:32.270 benchmark was quicker than the qualifying pole time recorded by Moss.

The combination of second place and fastest lap made Boavista an important points-scoring race in Hawthorn’s championship campaign, even though Ferrari did not win the Grand Prix.

Who has the most Formula 1 wins at Boavista?

No driver won more than once at Boavista. Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham therefore share the circuit’s Formula 1 victory record with one win each.

At constructor level, Vanwall and Cooper each recorded one victory. The rankings above provide the complete World Championship wins record for the Porto street circuit.

Ferrari’s Formula 1 record at Boavista

Ferrari never won a World Championship Grand Prix at Boavista, but the Scuderia played an important role in both races. Mike Hawthorn finished second and set the fastest lap in 1958, while Wolfgang von Trips finished fifth.

When Formula 1 returned in 1960, Wolfgang von Trips was Ferrari’s best finisher in fourth place. Phil Hill also competed for the Scuderia but retired from the race.

The Ferrari statistics above consolidate the team’s victories, pole positions and podium finishes at Boavista and make it possible to compare the Porto circuit with Estoril and other venues associated with Formula 1 in Portugal.

Jack Brabham won Formula 1’s final Boavista race in 1960

Formula 1 returned to Porto in 1960 for what became the circuit’s final World Championship race. Jack Brabham started third for Cooper-Climax and went on to win ahead of teammate Bruce McLaren.

Jim Clark finished third for Lotus, while Wolfgang von Trips brought Ferrari home in fourth position. Brabham’s victory formed part of another championship-winning season for the Australian.

John Surtees took pole at Boavista in 1960

The 1960 qualifying session produced a different name at the top of the timesheets. John Surtees put his Lotus-Climax on pole position with a lap of 2:25.560, narrowly beating Dan Gurney’s BRM.

Jack Brabham qualified third before converting his starting position into victory. Ferrari drivers Wolfgang von Trips and Phil Hill started ninth and tenth respectively.

John Surtees also set the fastest race lap in 1960

John Surtees followed his pole position by recording the fastest lap of the 1960 Portuguese Grand Prix. His best race lap was 2:27.530.

Surtees did not finish the race, meaning the weekend provides an interesting statistical example in which one driver held both the qualifying and race-lap benchmarks without appearing on the final podium.

Boavista pole position records

The two Formula 1 races at Boavista produced two different pole-sitters. Stirling Moss took pole for Vanwall in 1958, while John Surtees qualified first for Lotus in 1960.

With no repeat Formula 1 visit after 1960, both drivers therefore hold one Boavista pole position in the circuit’s all-time World Championship statistics.

Most Formula 1 podium finishes at Boavista

The six podium places available across Boavista’s two World Championship races were shared among drivers from Vanwall, Ferrari, Cooper and Lotus.

Mike Hawthorn’s second place in 1958 remains Ferrari’s only Formula 1 podium at the Porto circuit. The podium rankings above provide the complete driver and constructor picture across both Portuguese Grands Prix.

A 7.406 km street circuit through Porto

F1DB records the Formula 1 configuration of Circuito da Boavista at 7.406 km with 19 turns. The circuit ran anti-clockwise through public roads in Porto, giving the Grand Prix the characteristic surface changes and roadside hazards associated with early street racing.

The relatively long lap combined faster sections with tighter urban corners, creating a challenge very different from the permanent circuits used elsewhere on the Formula 1 calendar during the same period.

One Formula 1 layout at Boavista

F1DB associates Boavista’s World Championship history with one recorded Formula 1 layout. Unlike circuits such as Buenos Aires or Paul Ricard, there is therefore no need to divide its F1 lap records between several historical configurations.

The difference between the 1958 and 1960 lap times instead reflects changes in cars, tyres, performance and race conditions rather than a separate recorded Formula 1 circuit layout.

Boavista fastest race lap and qualifying records

Race fastest laps and qualifying records remain separate statistical categories. Mike Hawthorn set the fastest race lap in 1958 for Ferrari, while John Surtees recorded the fastest race lap during Formula 1’s second visit in 1960.

The statistics above distinguish these race benchmarks from qualifying performances so that searches for the Boavista Formula 1 lap record retain the appropriate session context.

Boavista records versus Portuguese Grand Prix records

Boavista records should not be confused with the complete history of the Portuguese Grand Prix. Formula 1 has also held the event at Monsanto, Estoril and Portimão, each of which represents a separate circuit and statistical record.
