He retired from the Indianapolis 500 before subsequently returning to Europe and winning each of the six remaining World Championship Grands Prix he entered during the season.
Alberto Ascari’s six consecutive wins in 1952
After Indianapolis, Ascari won the Belgian, French, British, German, Dutch and Italian Grands Prix in succession. The streak demonstrated the superiority of the Ferrari-Ascari combination during the 1952 season.

Alberto Ascari F1 career by constructor
Ascari’s Formula 1 World Championship career included Ferrari, Maserati and Lancia. The constructor table above separates his statistics so that the dominant Ferrari portion of his career remains distinct from his later appearances with the other Italian manufacturers.
Ascari made 27 official Grand Prix starts for Ferrari, two for Maserati and three for Lancia, producing a career total of 32 starts.
Alberto Ascari leaves Ferrari
After winning consecutive World Championships with Ferrari, Ascari left the Scuderia ahead of the 1954 season and joined Lancia’s ambitious new Formula 1 programme.
Development delays with the Lancia D50 meant that Ascari had relatively few opportunities to compete during 1954, leading to temporary appearances with other constructors while he waited for the new car.
Alberto Ascari returns to Ferrari for one race in 1954
Despite having left Ferrari as a full-time driver, Ascari made one final Formula 1 start for the Scuderia at the 1954 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
He started from the front row and led part of the race before retiring, making the event the 27th and final official Ferrari Formula 1 start of his career.
Alberto Ascari at Maserati
Ascari made two Formula 1 starts for Maserati during the 1954 season while waiting for Lancia’s new Grand Prix car to become race-ready.
Those appearances did not produce a podium or victory, although one of Ascari’s career fastest laps was recorded during his brief period with Maserati.
Alberto Ascari at Lancia
Ascari finally raced the Lancia D50 at the 1954 Spanish Grand Prix, where he immediately demonstrated the car’s potential by securing pole position.
He remained with Lancia for the beginning of the 1955 season and made two further World Championship starts, in Argentina and Monaco.
Alberto Ascari’s final Formula 1 race
Ascari’s final Formula 1 start came at the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix for Lancia. He qualified on the front row alongside Juan Manuel Fangio and remained among the leading drivers during the race.
His race ended dramatically when the Lancia left the circuit at the harbour chicane and entered the Mediterranean. Ascari escaped the accident and was rescued from the water.
Alberto Ascari’s final days
Four days after the Monaco Grand Prix, Ascari visited Monza while fellow driver Eugenio Castellotti was testing a Ferrari sports car. Ascari decided to complete several laps in the car during the session.
He suffered a fatal accident during the test on 26 May 1955. Ascari was 36 years old, bringing an exceptional racing career to an abrupt end only days after his escape at Monaco.
Why Alberto Ascari has 32 starts but 33 entries
Ascari was entered in 33 Formula 1 World Championship events but officially started 32. The difference comes from the 1950 French Grand Prix, where Ascari was entered for Ferrari but did not start after the Scuderia withdrew its works cars from the event.
The same distinction affects his Ferrari statistics. Ascari had 28 Ferrari World Championship entries but 27 official Grand Prix starts.
Alberto Ascari season-by-season F1 statistics
The season-by-season table provides a chronological view of Ascari’s Formula 1 World Championship career from 1950 through 1955. It covers his early Ferrari seasons, consecutive championship campaigns, brief appearances for Maserati and his final period with Lancia.
Because Ascari’s Formula 1 career is complete, these records form a stable historical dataset, although early World Championship scoring rules require careful distinction between points earned in races and points officially counted towards championship classifications.
Alberto Ascari and historical Formula 1 points
Formula 1’s early championship rules allowed only a limited number of a driver’s best results to count towards the final Drivers’ Championship classification. Fastest-lap points could also be divided between drivers who recorded identical fastest times.
As a result, historical databases may show both the total points earned from individual race results and the smaller total officially counted towards Ascari’s championship classifications. The statistics on this page preserve those historical distinctions rather than applying modern Formula 1 scoring rules retrospectively.
Alberto Ascari’s place in Ferrari history
Ascari occupies a foundational place in Ferrari Formula 1 history. He delivered the Scuderia’s first Drivers’ World Championship in 1952 and successfully defended the title in 1953.
His Ferrari record includes 13 victories from only 27 official starts, together with 17 podium finishes, 13 pole positions and two World Championships.
Ascari also remains significant in Italian motorsport history as the driver who established Ferrari as a championship-winning Formula 1 team during the first years of the World Championship.
Alberto Ascari circuit records
Ascari achieved victories at many of the circuits that defined early Formula 1, including Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone, the Nürburgring, Zandvoort and Bremgarten.

How Alberto Ascari’s F1 records are calculated
The statistics on this page are generated from locally processed historical Formula 1 data. Career totals, constructor records, Ferrari-specific results and season-by-season statistics are calculated separately so that results achieved for Ferrari, Maserati and Lancia remain correctly attributed.
Race entries and official Grand Prix starts are treated separately. Ascari had 33 World Championship entries but 32 official starts. His Ferrari record consists of 28 entries and 27 starts because he did not start the 1950 French Grand Prix after Ferrari withdrew its works entries.
Historical points also require separate treatment because only selected results counted towards the final Drivers’ Championship classifications during Ascari’s era, while shared fastest laps could produce fractional points.
