6 Sprint Races for next year
Formula 1 has officially announced that in the 2024 season, the Grand Prix calendar – set to reach 24 races – will be enhanced by six Sprint races spread throughout the year. Consequently, drivers and teams will compete in a championship spanning a monstrous total of 30 races. The confirmation of the six 100 km mini-races is not a surprise, as it had been widely anticipated. However, there are some surprises in terms of the race locations.
Limited Presence in Europe
Firstly, only one of the Sprints will take place in Europe. The Old Continent – evidently – is gradually losing appeal contractually. The only double-header weekend will be in Austria, historically one of the homes of Sprint races since their introduction in the second season in 2022. The significant change from the recent past is represented by China.
| GP | Circuit | Date |
|---|---|---|
| China | Shanghai | April 19-21 |
| You love me | You love me | May 3-5 |
| Austria | Spielberg | June 28-30 |
| USA | Austin | October 18-20 |
| Brazil | Sao Paulo | November 1-3 |
| Qatar | Lusail | November 29 – December 1 |
Shanghai’s Return
The Shanghai circuit, absent from the championship calendar since 2019 due to the pandemic, will return in 2024 during the weekend of April 19-21, also hosting the Saturday race. Another novelty is the Miami track, becoming the second American circuit after Austin (also confirmed for the next year) to host a Sprint. Exiting the Sprint program in this rotation are Spa and Baku.
Further Changes in Early 2024
Brazil – a fixture in the Sprint calendar since 2021 – and Lusail are also confirmed. In the official statement released to announce the calendar, F1 also specified that further official updates on the format are expected in early 2024. The intention, as stated in the release, is to “further streamline the weekend, separating Sprint activities from Grand Prix activities. The Sporting Advisory Committee will work on specific details, particularly regarding the times and rules of the parc fermé, for a final proposal to be presented to the F1 Commission at the first meeting of 2024.”
