Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher, has confirmed that there are ongoing negotiations regarding a potential return to Formula 1 for the 2026 season. After a period away from the sport, the German driver could be one of the key candidates for a seat at the new Cadillac Formula 1 team, which is set to make its debut on the grid.
The American outfit, part of the General Motors group and partnered with Andretti, has not yet officially announced its driver line-up for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. As the team prepares to enter the sport, it is currently evaluating a shortlist of drivers, and Mick Schumacher has emerged as one of the leading names. According to Schumacher himself, discussions with the team are already underway and progressing positively. The team is expected to define its full driver line-up during the summer break.
Mick Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut with the Haas F1 Team in 2021 and competed with them through the end of the 2022 season. However, after being dropped by Haas, he transitioned into a reserve driver role for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team under the guidance of Team Principal Toto Wolff. In parallel with his Formula 1 commitments, Schumacher has also been competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship as part of the Alpine Hypercar program, expanding his experience in high-level motorsport beyond single-seaters.
Despite his ventures outside of Formula 1, Mick Schumacher has always expressed a strong desire to return to the pinnacle of motorsport. At this stage, the opportunity with Cadillac appears to be the most realistic and potentially the only viable route back onto the grid.
Confirmation of ongoing negotiations
Speaking directly about his current status and the possibility of rejoining the Formula 1 field, Mick Schumacher confirmed that talks are indeed taking place. According to his own statements, there have been encouraging conversations aimed at securing him a place among the Formula 1 drivers for the 2026 season. Cadillac, which is actively seeking two drivers for its inaugural campaign, has been linked not only with Schumacher but also with other experienced drivers such as Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez.
The Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas, currently with the Stake F1 Team (which will become Audi in 2026), has also been mentioned in connection with Alpine, raising the possibility that a seat at Cadillac might open up for Mick Schumacher. These movements in the driver market could have a direct impact on Schumacher’s chances.
In an interview given to the Brazilian edition of Motorsport.com, Mick Schumacher elaborated on the ongoing situation:
“Yes, the talks are ongoing. The communication with the team has been very positive so far. They have hired an impressive number of people for this project. Dealing with them is a great position to be in,” the former Ferrari driver said.
Schumacher’s comments suggest that Cadillac is making serious investments and building an infrastructure that could support a competitive entry into Formula 1. The level of resources being allocated by the American manufacturer signals its intent to be a serious player on the grid, not just an entrant.
Cadillac Team Principal Graeme Lowdon recently emphasized the kind of drivers the team is looking for. He made it clear that the team wants drivers who are eager to prove what they can do—not individuals looking for revenge or trying to make a personal statement, but rather those who are motivated, focused, and committed to building something from the ground up. This attitude could suit Mick Schumacher, who is still relatively young but comes with a solid foundation of Formula 1 experience and a legacy name that brings attention and expectation.
With the Formula 1 driver market heating up and several experienced names in play, all eyes will be on the developments involving Cadillac’s entry. The upcoming weeks and months will be crucial as the team finalizes its structure and announces the drivers who will represent its ambitious project in 2026.
For Mick Schumacher, this could represent a defining chapter in his career. A return to Formula 1, particularly with a brand-new team backed by a major automotive manufacturer like General Motors, would not only mark a personal comeback but could also set the stage for a new beginning in his pursuit of success at the highest level of motorsport.
