Formula 1 says it will monitor the situation in Russia “very closely” ahead of the planned grand prix in September following the invasion of Ukraine. The series have released an official statement regarding the future of the Russian Grand Prix after Russian forces launched a major military assault on neighbouring Ukraine.
Russia commenced a major military assault on Ukraine on Thursday morning after months of building tensions, having already sent troops into two separatist regions earlier in the week.
The reaction of Formula 1 comes amid pressure growing on sporting organisations to boycott Russia, which is set to stage a number of major events over the coming months. UK prime minister Boris Johnson said that Russian president Vladimir Putin had “chosen a path of bloodshed and destruction by launching this unprovoked attack on Ukraine”, and that the UK and its allies would “respond decisively”.

UEFA, football’s leading European body, have already been urged by the UK government to find a new venue for May’s Champions League final, set to be held in St. Petersburg, and it was only a matter of time before attention turned to September’s Russian Grand Prix. At the same time, the European football governing body has already postponed a UEFA Youth League match due to take place in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
Despite the fact that the Formula 1 race is scheduled to take place in more than seven months away, F1 issued a short statement on Thursday regarding the future of the Russian Grand Prix:
“Formula 1 is closely watching the very fluid developments like many others and at this time has no further comment on the race scheduled for September. We will continue to monitor the situation very closely.”
