Former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali, continuing his interview with Motorsport (you can read the first part here), then focused on the regulatory change that will take place in Formula 1 in 2026. In three years, the sport will further change to promote electric and sustainable fuels, reducing CO2 emissions. Here are the words of the chief executive officer of the most important motorsport category.
Stefano Domenicali and the 2026 regulations
Comparing the 2021 regulations, which offered an epic battle for the Formula 1 championship, with what we will see from 2026, Stefano Domenicali responded to the concerns of fans who are worried about seeing another dominant team, as was the case with Mercedes’ era in 2014 or Red Bull’s recent success. Here are his most important comments:
“There will be an important intersection of variables. I believe that the budget cap system will bring teams closer together. Then, it is true that a regulation will come into effect, and there will be new variables introduced for many different reasons that made sense when they were conceived. For example, when we announced sustainable fuels, there was a need to find a compromise among the manufacturers, and it is clear that if we were to analyze it retrospectively, we would have made certain choices differently. What is important today is to try to bring together the regulations for the new Power Unit with the guidelines for the new generation of cars. It must always remain a Formula 1 car.” – the former Ferrari boss explained.
Speaking about the weight of the cars, Stefano Domenicali added: “It is a very important issue. Over the years, the weight of the cars has increased, and of course, no one questions what has been done in terms of safety, but there has also been the development of new technologies and the consequent adoption of batteries, which has had an impact on weight.” – the Italian manager pointed out.
“As Formula 1, we need to ask ourselves what we can accelerate in terms of development, and here the issue of sustainable fuels is crucial. The perception, as demonstrated by the market, is changing in this regard, and I believe that it was an excellent choice when we decided to embark on this path.” – the former Ferrari team principal continued.

Stefano Domenicali concluded by saying: “We don’t want to engage in technological wars against full electric mobility; it is a technology that will have its market. But we believe that Formula 1 can accelerate the possibility of having sustainable fuels at the right price, and this will be a great help for mobility in general, including commercial and aviation sectors, as well as the existing fleet of cars in the world, which is about one and a half billion. It is a very important challenge for Formula 1, and I am confident that it will also help unify the vision of all the teams.” – the Formula 1 chief executive officer stated.
