Formula 1 chief executive officer and former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has defended current Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto after the recent criticism and reaction from the fans and media, as many believe he is not the right man to lead the Maranello team.
2016 Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg was just one of those who slammed the Italian team after the events which took place in the Dutch Grand Prix at the Zandvoort circuit, claiming that even Formula 2 and Formula 3 teams have been able to handle race strategy and pitstops better than Scuderia Ferrari this season.
“It is easy to criticise from both inside and out.” – Stefano Domenicali, who in 1995 was appointed head of personnel in Ferrari’s sporting department and was involved with sponsorship liaison, before being promoted to Team Manager in December 1996 and becoming the team’s Sporting Director in 2002. On 12 November 2007 Ferrari announced Stefano Domenicali would take on the role of Director of the Ferrari Formula One team, a position previously held by Jean Todt, and became team principal in 2008 until he resigned under pressure in early 2014.
“But I believe that at the moment all Ferrari people must support Mattia Binotto. After that, I do not allow myself to judge the choices that president John Elkann and Mattia Binotto will have to make to obtain the results they deserve.” – the Formula 1 chief executive officer added.
At the same time, it is true that Scuderia Ferrari’s issues during the 2022 Formula 1 season with power unit reliability as well as strategy decisions and operational procedures such as slow pitstops have allowed Red Bull and Max Verstappen to capitalize on many race weekends and become clear favourites to win both championships this season.

“For this big gap between first and second, we need to evaluate the specific role played by reliability and management.” – Stefano Domenicali said in a recent interview for Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport – “But overall, the gaps behind are smaller than in the past leaving us with duels that promise to only be concluded at the very end.” – the former Ferrari boss concluded.
