Scuderia Ferrari former technical chief Enrique Scalabroni is urging the Italian side to establish a clear number 1 driver for the second part of the 2022 Formula 1 championship, as the Maranello team should focus on the duel with Red Bull and especially Max Verstappen.
Argentinian race car designer, technical director, and team racing boss Enrique Scalabroni, who joined the Maranello team as chassis and aerodynamics Chief Designer in September 1989, remains a well-known name in the Formula 1 paddock. The Scalabroni-designed 641 and 641/2 Ferrari cars were designed in collaboration with Steve Nichols and won six Formula 1 races in the 1990 season with Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell, as the Italian side took second place in the Constructors Championship.
Enrique Scalabroni disagrees with how Scuderia Ferrari is managing the current situation with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, as Mattia Binotto confirmed the two drivers are allowed to fight each other:
“Ferrari must have a first and second driver for the battle with Verstappen,” – the Argentinian race car designer said, as reported by f1sport.it – “At this level, with a lot of points to make up for, they need to do that. The second driver must be there to prioritise the team. It doesn’t matter if the name is Leclerc or Sainz. It’s not about the driver, it’s about the team,” the former Ferrari boss added – “If they want to win as a team, they can’t do what Williams did with Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet, for example,” he explained.

The general opinion is that Scuderia Ferrari’s leading candidate as number 1 should be Charles Leclerc, as the Monegasque driver has a longer contract, higher salary and ahead of the French Grand Prix is in front of his Maranello teammate in the Drivers’ standings, with a 37-point gap.
“The most important thing is to drive for the team. So I think the biggest issue is which of the two drivers has the most points. Ferrari is not looking at that now, but it has to make a decision. They should focus on the driver with the most points and who has had the fewest problems.” – Enrique Scalabroni concluded.
