Ferrari Driver Market, Luca di Montezemolo’s Opinion
During the summer break, the driver market is always a been a highly-discussed topic. The Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, both have contracts expiring at the end of the 2024 Formula One championship. However, the team principal of Ferrari, Frederic Vasseur, has not prioritized contract renewals as the top concern for the Maranello Scuderia. Their main focus is to first find their way back to victory, which has been absent for over one year in Formula 1.
When asked about the situation, former Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo emphasized that Charles Leclerc is a driver the Ferrari team should definitely focus on, providing him with a competitive car as soon as possible: “I would confirm Charles, he is talented, and I don’t believe there are other drivers available which are better than him. But currently, who drives for the Red Team is the least of their problems,” Luca di Montezemolo’s words, as reported by the Italian newspaper Il Resto Del Carlino.
Frederic Vasseur expressed satisfaction with Charles Leclerc’s third-place finish the 7.004-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot, Belgium, which allows the Maranello team to head into the summer break with a positive mindset. However, Luca di Montezemolo disagrees with this perspective: “I’m sorry to see celebrations for a third-place finish like in Spa. This isn’t what Ferrari stands for, and the Old Man [Enzo Ferrari] wouldn’t have accepted it. Never,” – the former Ferrari president concluded, referring to the mentality of the founder, Enzo Ferrari, who always felt that “second is the first of the losers.”
