Former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso turns 45: F1 career, world titles and pursuit of win 33. Fernando Alonso still hungry for victory at 45 after remarkable F1 career.

Fernando Alonso celebrates his 45th birthday today with the same hunger for Formula 1 success that defined him as a rookie. The two-time world champion remains determined to return to the front with Aston Martin, Adrian Newey and Honda, continuing a remarkable career that has already spanned more than two decades.

It is a significant milestone for the longest-serving driver in Formula 1. Fernando Alonso is now more than twice the age of Arvid Lindblad, the youngest competitor on the current grid. During his extraordinary journey, the Spaniard has helped change F1, represented numerous teams and become equally famous for his exceptional performances and several questionable career decisions.

Fernando Alonso has undoubtedly been surrounded by controversy, but his desire to win remains undeniable despite his age and the two world championships he secured in 2005 and 2006. Aston Martin has only been genuinely competitive during his time with the team in 2023, yet he continues to believe firmly in its new project with Adrian Newey and Honda, even though his previous experience with the Japanese manufacturer produced some deeply unpleasant memories.

The question now is whether the famous number 33 — Fernando Alonso’s long-awaited 33rd Formula 1 victory — will finally arrive before he retires.

Fernando Alonso’s F1 career shaped by constant change

With more than 20 years in Formula 1, Fernando Alonso has witnessed the fastest racing cars on the planet develop and transform more than any other current driver. Of all the team changes made during those two decades, his breakthrough with Renault in 2003 remains one of the most important.

The French team gave Fernando Alonso his first Formula 1 victory that same year and delivered his first world championship two seasons later. The young Spanish prospect became the driver who finally ended the dominant run enjoyed by Ferrari and Michael Schumacher, before successfully defending his title in 2006.

Fernando Alonso chose to join McLaren for 2007, but the extraordinary speed of rookie team-mate Lewis Hamilton caught him by surprise. Their increasingly intense determination to beat one another contributed to both drivers losing the championship, with Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen ultimately taking the title.

From 2008, Fernando Alonso chose to return to the familiar environment of Renault. However, the car was not competitive and the desired results failed to arrive. His speed was clearly still intact, which convinced Ferrari to sign the driver who had repeatedly stood in the Scuderia’s way earlier in his career.

Fernando Alonso came agonisingly close to glory with Ferrari

Fernando Alonso fell in love with Ferrari after joining the team in 2010, while the Tifosi quickly embraced the Spaniard. He immediately fought for the world championship, but the title slipped away as the car lost competitiveness towards the end of the season. Similar disappointments followed in later years, culminating in the memorable 2012 campaign.

Those near misses remain central to Fernando Alonso’s greatest Ferrari regret. He came remarkably close to becoming world champion in red, but ultimately left Maranello without securing the third crown that had appeared within reach.

The 2014 season brought a radical change to Formula 1’s technical regulations. Ferrari was not competitive enough and frequently made strategic mistakes, prompting Fernando Alonso to reunite with a partnership that had previously rewritten the sport’s history: McLaren and Honda.

Expectations surrounding the project were enormous, but the reality proved disastrous. The engine was designed to be compact and leave greater freedom for the aerodynamic concept, yet the entire package became a failure. Fernando Alonso remained for three years while attempting to help revive the project, but repeated disappointments eventually convinced him to step away from Formula 1 after the 2018 season.

That difficult chapter became one of several career decisions that left Fernando Alonso with a long list of missed opportunities. The Spaniard was even later considered for another leading seat, with reports detailing how Fernando Alonso emerged as a possible Mercedes candidate before the team ultimately chose a different path.

Fernando Alonso returned to F1 with his desire undiminished

Fernando Alonso made an extraordinary return to the Formula 1 grid with Alpine, formerly Renault, in 2021. He secured his first podium since his final season with Ferrari in 2014, demonstrating that neither his performance nor his appetite for victory had diminished.

Unfortunately, the 2022 regulation change left Alpine struggling and strong results remained scarce. His team-mate offered greater resistance than ever before, leading Fernando Alonso to go all-in for 2023 by moving to Aston Martin as Sebastian Vettel’s replacement.

Few expected him to achieve an immediate breakthrough in green, but Aston Martin produced a highly competitive car at the beginning of 2023 and Fernando Alonso’s speed was once again on full display. He finished fourth in the world championship and collected six podiums.

The 2024 and 2025 seasons became progressively more difficult, but Fernando Alonso remained fast — exceptionally fast — despite his age. The arrival of Adrian Newey made 2026 appear highly promising, only for the opening races to prove a major disappointment. Questions about his career choices continued to follow him, alongside debate over whether Fernando Alonso could have won more world championships.

Aston Martin’s Hungary upgrade offers Fernando Alonso hope

The B-spec package introduced at the Hungarian Grand Prix delivered a significant improvement in performance, although Aston Martin remains a long way from the front. The extensive changes to the Aston Martin AMR26 did not produce an immediate miracle, but they offered encouraging evidence that the struggling project could move forward.

Fernando Alonso still believes, even at 45. He retains the mentality of a fighter and the spirit of a lion who will keep pushing until the end for another opportunity to experience what it feels like to lead the field.

For all the controversies and questionable decisions that have accompanied his career, that relentless determination remains one of Fernando Alonso’s most admirable qualities. Happy birthday, champion.
