In this 2025 season, beyond the on-track difficulties, a new problem has reportedly emerged within Ferrari, according to the team’s former communications consultant. Here’s what it’s about.
Ferrari has been under the spotlight in recent days. Many rumors are circulating around the Maranello team regarding the futures of Fred Vasseur and Charles Leclerc. According to the Italian press, both may have a future away from Ferrari. However, since the Canadian GP, both the Team Principal and the Monegasque driver have denied these rumors and expressed their full confidence in the project.
Former Ferrari communications consultant Roberto Boccafogli has identified a possible new issue within the Maranello team.
Ferrari crisis: what needs to change?
Roberto Boccafogli appeared on the latest episode of The Race F1 podcast with Jon Noble and Edd Straw, highlighting how much pressure Ferrari is under at the moment. Roberto Boccafogli compared the media attention surrounding the Scuderia to that received by the Italian national football team: “We know that what can sometimes be strong for other teams can become much stronger for Ferrari. That’s a characteristic of Ferrari. Especially in Italy, Ferrari is exactly like the Italian national football team.”
Roberto Boccafogli acknowledged the great work done by Fred Vasseur in recent years. Under the Team Principal’s leadership, Ferrari won five races last year and missed out on the Constructors’ Championship by just 14 points. This is also why expectations for 2025 were very high. But something at Ferrari needs to change. According to the former communications consultant, the team should adjust its communication strategy. On several occasions, the statements made by Fred Vasseur and by the two Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, have appeared contradictory. Boccafogli emphasized this in his remarks: “Fred [Vasseur] is THE communication of the Scuderia. He speaks, says something. But since last March, to every question like ‘Fred, what’s wrong?’ the answer has always been, ‘Something’s wrong, but no problem, we’re unlocking potential, there’s more potential to unlock,’ and so on.”
Communication could become Ferrari’s Achilles’ heel. According to the communications expert, the two drivers have, on multiple occasions, said the exact opposite of what Fred Vasseur has claimed: “First Leclerc, and then Lewis too, began saying—and now they say it quite clearly: ‘There’s no more potential to unlock. The car is nowhere. Let’s think about next year.’”
