Former F1 world champion warns: Ferrari may need 4–5 years to build around Lewis Hamilton. Mika Hakkinen believes Lewis Hamilton’s adaptation to Ferrari will take time.

The arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari continues to stir debate across the Formula 1 paddock. After a difficult start to the season for the seven-time world champion, several former drivers have analyzed the challenges faced by the British star in finding the right feeling with the SF-25. Among them is Mika Hakkinen, who offered a clear and realistic interpretation of the situation faced by Ferrari’s newest signing.

In an interview with the Hindustan Times, the two-time Finnish world champion praised Lewis Hamilton’s exceptional talent but also underlined how demanding it can be to adapt to a completely new car and team environment. “Lewis is an extraordinary driver, one of the strongest in history. He has built his career by handling immense pressure and almost always coming out on top. But when you change teams, the real challenge isn’t just driving — it’s making the car an extension of your own style,” explained Mika Hakkinen.

The former McLaren driver then highlighted the technical complexities behind a major move like Hamilton’s switch to Maranello. “It takes time to tailor a technical project perfectly around a driver. Usually, it takes four or five years before a team fully understands the needs of the person behind the wheel. It’s not enough to change setups or engine maps: the engineers must learn the driver’s language, understand his reactions, and anticipate his preferences. Only then can the package become truly competitive,” added the Finn, recalling his own experience during his McLaren years.

Mika Hakkinen’s words offer a more balanced perspective compared to the criticism Hamilton has faced in recent weeks. After years in a highly structured environment like Mercedes, the seven-time world champion is now going through a complex adaptation process that demands patience, trust, and technical harmony. And if there is anyone who knows what it means to rebuild the relationship between driver and car, that person is Mika Hakkinen.
