One of the most discussed topics in F1 over the past year has been the language used in both public statements and team radio communications during sessions. During the Miami Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton used strong language, complaining over the radio to the Ferrari pit wall about certain race management decisions.
The seven-time World Champion is not facing any penalty, but according to Ralf Schumacher, his behavior was not honorable. Here’s how the German judged these tensions within Ferrari.
What happened between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari?
What sparked the debate among members of the Scuderia were team orders. Lewis Hamilton, on yellow tyres, had a better pace than Charles Leclerc, who was on whites. However, Ferrari was late in ordering a position swap with Charles. When the Monegasque eventually let his teammate through, the Briton was unable to pull away, so another team order was issued and Charles retook the position.
During this phase of the Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton’s radio messages to the team were, in Ralf Schumacher’s view, inappropriate. According to him, Lewis should have simply expressed regret about what happened after the race, without trying to justify his tone during interviews.
The German went on to explain: “This shouldn’t happen, considering his experience and age. He could have behaved a bit more intelligently. That would have been more appropriate. The people at Ferrari have now come to know Lewis Hamilton a bit. The relationship is ruined by actions like these. What happened will remain, and he himself must be aware of that.”
