The choice made by the FIA during the 2023 Austin Grand Prix weekend to conduct underbody inspections on only some cars sparked a lot of discussion. Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were disqualified after the race due to excessive wear on the cars’ underbodies.
Many criticized the FIA for not inspecting all the cars. In reality, the Federation acted in accordance with the regulations, conducting random inspections among the cars. Furthermore, some argue that the presence of the Sprint Race, which subjected the cars to greater wear than usual, should have been taken into account.
Looking at the floor inspections conducted during the 2023 Formula 1 season, it’s clear that two teams were inspected more frequently than others. These teams are Mercedes and Ferrari, whose cars were inspected a total of five times.
McLaren, Red Bull, Haas, and Alfa Romeo underwent two inspections each, while Alpine and Aston Martin were inspected only once. Up to this point, there have been no inspections for AlphaTauri and Williams.

The FIA’s decision in Austin significantly changed the final standings, with Lewis Hamilton losing the podium he had secured in a race where he could have aimed for victory. The British driver then decided to comment on the Federation’s decision through a social media post in which he wrote “mood” as a caption to a photo with Charles Leclerc.
