FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem confirms: Formula 1 can return to a historic circuit

The FIA is open to the return of a historic circuit in F1, according to Mohammed Ben Sulayem. In recent months, there has been much talk and excitement about the expansion of the Circus. The sport aims to reach increasingly diverse markets, starting with new stops in the United States, but also in South America, Asia, and Africa. While circuits like Monza are pushed for progress, another historic track is emerging for Formula 1.

This winter, if not for the driver market – entirely frozen compared to 2022-23 – is offering some suggestions regarding another “market,” that of circuits. Nothing is confirmed, but it seems that Madrid is ready to dethrone Barcelona, for example. Just as the agreement for a Grand Prix in Colombia seems to have fallen through.

In this optimistic and enthusiastic atmosphere, Mohammed Ben Sulayem also enters the scene. The President of the FIA, in addition to the continents already touched by Formula 1, shows particular interest in Africa and one of its historic circuits: “We have excellent contacts in Africa,” he declared to Motorsport-Magazin.com. “They deserve more attention.”

“In South Africa, they have a long history in motorsport. Since last year, there has been much talk about a possible return of Formula 1 to Kyalami. It would be a big deal for Africa.”

Not only a Grand Prix at Kyalami, but the plans of the International Federation have a much broader scope: “We are also thinking about an electric championship that would involve Africa; it would be fantastic.”

“We do not forget about Africa; we do not forget about China; we do not forget about Latin America,” continues Mohammed Ben Sulayem. “We see the enthusiasm and excitement in the paddock. In some regions, however, there is no interest in Formula 1. For them, karting is like Formula 1, their circuits are like Formula 1.”

For the President of the FIA, some countries should not be forced into approaching the Circus. If an automobile club seeks support exclusively for hill climbs, an example mentioned by Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the Federation should provide what is requested: “They might not be interested in Formula 1, Formula 2, or Formula E.”
