While many are already expecting the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort circuit to become a second Monaco event, the FIA has recently made overtaking at this track even more difficult. The second and last DRS zone of the track in the dunes has been shortened due to safety concerns.
This weekend the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort will be driven with two DRS zones. The third one was supposed to start going into the famous Arie Luyendyk turn, but the FIA has decided to remove it, at least for the moment, as confirmed by recently taken this plan off the table, as reported by daily newspaper De Telegraaf.
Despite the fact that the corner can easily be taken at full throttle, the regulatory body of Formula 1 feels it is better not to take any risks by allowing the drag reduction system (DRS) to be used in the corner itself. On the straight after the corner it is still allowed, as well as on the straight towards turn eleven.
Research project
After the Zandvoort weekend, the FIA feels it will have gathered enough data to carry out further research and therefore be able to evaluate and determine whether the DRS is completely safe to use in the Arie Luyendyk corner for future events at this circuit.
