Sensational: FIA ready to modify the regulations, rumor from Suzuka
After what happened this morning to Ollie Bearman during the Suzuka race, there has been only one topic of discussion in the Formula 1 paddock: safety must be guaranteed at all costs. A number of drivers have openly voiced their concerns against the FIA on this matter, with Carlos Sainz leading the criticism. During an interview, the Spanish driver made it clear that if immediate action is not taken, it will only be a matter of time before someone gets hurt.
While this issue continues to dominate conversations, journalist Thomas Maher shared an intriguing piece of information on X, a rumor that has been circulating among teams in recent hours and that, if confirmed, could have a major impact on the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. According to what has emerged, the FIA is evaluating a potential revision of the current 50/50 split between the internal combustion engine and the electrical component within the power units.
“After Suzuka I heard some interesting admissions. In particular, within the FIA, there is a growing awareness that the 50/50 split between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor is not the right approach. In the short term, it is believed that the limits on energy deployment are being examined, while in the long term there is consideration of modifying the balance between the two elements of the power unit,” Thomas Maher stated.
However, the journalist also emphasized that any potential regulatory change does not depend solely on the FIA. The final decision would ultimately rest with the teams, as unanimous approval from all eleven teams on the grid would be required for such a change to be implemented. At present, not all teams appear to be in favor of this kind of modification.
“Reaching an agreement between drivers and teams will be a major obstacle to overcome, given that not all teams agree with their drivers on the issues being discussed. However, there is now a clear awareness that changes are necessary.”
It now remains to be seen what will happen in the coming weeks, particularly during this enforced one-month break before the next race in Miami. According to Frederic Vasseur, this period could mark the beginning of a new phase of the season for all teams, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of the 2026 championship.
The shockwaves from Oliver Bearman’s crash have therefore forced the FIA to look critically at the fundamental DNA of the 2026 power units. Based on the content of these paddock rumors, the next four weeks will be as much about boardroom negotiations as they are about wind tunnel developments.
