Ferrari suffers a clear decline in the 2025 Formula 1 season, while McLaren stands out above all rivals: here is the comparison with last year.
With the championship on its summer break, this is the ideal moment to assess how the season has unfolded so far. Comparing the results of the previous Formula 1 campaign with those of 2025 highlights a dramatic drop in performance for both Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Ferrari, while McLaren has made an extraordinary leap forward. Significant shifts have also occurred in the midfield pack.
Given that 2025 marks the final year of the current technical regulations, the general expectation was that the competitive order would have largely stabilised, with teams having already maximised their understanding of the rules. However, by examining the points scored by each team in this championship compared to the same stage last season, it becomes clear that the situation is far from static. Some outfits have managed to take significant steps forward, while others have suffered evident and costly setbacks.
The decline of Ferrari and Red Bull
The two teams that have regressed the most are Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Ferrari. For the Milton Keynes-based squad, the drop has been particularly severe, with a deficit of 214 points compared to their tally at the same point in 2024. Last year, Red Bull were fighting for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, having dominated the early stages of the season thanks to Max Verstappen before facing a more contested summer stretch — though they still regularly occupied the top positions.
Ferrari ranks second in terms of negative progression in 2025. The Maranello-based team currently has 85 points fewer than they had at this point last year. The SF-25 has failed to meet the high expectations that surrounded its debut, and this deficit risks becoming even larger when compared to the strong end to the 2024 season.
In contrast, McLaren has outshone all of its competitors, boasting an impressive 559 points compared to 366 at the same stage last year. The Woking-based team executed a flawless development programme over the winter and arrived at the opening race with a car that is significantly superior to that of their rivals. Mercedes, meanwhile, also finds itself in the negative column among the top teams, with a deficit of 30 points compared to 2024.
Shifts in the midfield order
Substantial changes have taken place in the pecking order behind the front-runners. Williams has demonstrated remarkable progress, improving its points tally by 66 and climbing to a provisional fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship. Sauber has also made a major leap forward, scoring 51 more points than in 2024, which places them seventh, just behind Aston Martin. The latter, however, has suffered a decline of 21 points.
Further down the order, the situation has been more stable. Racing Bulls, Haas, and Alpine have all made small but positive gains compared to last season, improving their totals by 11, 8, and 9 points respectively. Naturally, in the lower positions of the standings, the number of available points is much smaller, so the differences between the two seasons remain relatively limited in scale.
